the play calling is handed over to Sherman?

This is no chicken little thread, so please, let's not turn it into one.

I was just wondering this morning if there were ever a realistic scenario where Jones says that he's seen enough and it's time to try something new before it's too late, say in week 5 or 6.

Once again, it's week one and at this point it would be out of the question to even consider the notion, regardless of what anyone thinks of Garret's playcalling in the week one. It doesn't make any sense right now. But, would it ever make sense?

Discuss.

Yes I do see that scenario.

....when Jason Garrett becomes the Head Coach.

Agreed. I would not be happy about that, but it's the only chance Sherman calls the plays.

I doubt it. While Sherman is a good receivers coach, I don't believe he is that good of a coordinator. If he was considered a good prospect as a coordinator he most likely would be elsewhere.

Just checked the stats.

Ray Sherman has been an offensive coordinator all of three seasons in the NFL.

His first time was under Pete Carroll in 1994 with the Jets. That offense ranked 25th in points and 22nd in yards.

Then the Steelers in 1998. 28th in points and 25th in yards.

Then his only really successful tenure as an offensive coordinator. 1999 in Minnesota. 5th in scoring and 3rd in yards, but that was during Minnesota's heyday with Randy Moss. And that offense went down from the previous year where they were 1st and 2nd.

So, while Ray Sherman is probably the best receivers coach in the league and he has years and years of experience, Jason Garrett now has more years of experience in playcalling and as an offensive coordinator than Sherman. Garrett has also been wildly more successful in calling plays in all his years than Sherman ever was.

I think I'd take Garrett over Sherman in playcalling now. You have to consider why Sherman never lasted more than one year as an OC? I don't know the reason, but that tells you something.

I agree, to be honest.

My musings are born more of "Does Jerry Jones panic?" with the Super Bowl being played in Dallas and his desire to be the first team to host.

No. He doesn't. Jerry has never panicked during a season.

The only time I have ever seen him come close to panicking during the season was when he demanded that Hutchinson start over Carter in Campo's last year.

Plus all he has preached the last two years about this coaching staff is wanting to keep consistency and familiarity.

Also, if Jerry does anything like that, forcing Sherman to start calling the plays, that would mean he would have to fire Garrett. That won't happen.

With the money Jerry is paying Garrett I doubt we'll see anything that would totally remove him from his play calling duties this season. Jerry has shown that when he pays alot of money to someone such as RW and Barber he's going to stick with them no matter what.

Nice analysis, CM.

However, just to play devil's advocate here, those teams in New York and Pittsburgh weren't exactly stacked on the offensive talent category.

I would think that THIS offense more closely resembles the 1999 Vikings team than the aforementioned two.

Very true, KJJ.
