Watching SD-Denver And it just went into overtime. The Ref messed up and gave the players the playoff version of the overtime rules which I found ammusing, but not the purpose of the thread.

The question of the thread is, do you like the current overtime rules and playoff version?

I'm OK with the regular season version, especially with the KO being moved up.

But I don't understand why the NFL won't simply go with an extra quarter of play to determine a winner in the playoffs

The playoffs are too important to not fairly determine a winner and going with an extra quarter of play would best do that. While not changing the game as the new playoff OT rules do.

I'd even go with an 7 or 8 minute OT period. That's plenty of extra time to fairly determine a winner without placing that much extra strain on the players.

Hate it. Totally.

You're right on saying it should be a full quarter, especially in the playoffs.

I like the current playoff OT compared to the regular season sudden death OT. That one is clearly flawed as its been proven statistically that the winner of the coin toss wins the majority of the time. Both offenses need a fair shot.

That being said I agree an extra quarter or at least half quarter would be better than the playoff OT. But I am sure the TV networks would be worried about that messing up their schedules.

Yeah, I hate it too. The rules shouldn't change in the playoffs.

Actually I think the team that kicks off first wins more in recent years.

Sign me up as a sudden death fan.

I do not understand how you get a chance to tie.

It is over, loss, time expires when the score changes beyond regulation.

Only sport I would ask about is basketball. But at least they only give you five minutes instead of 15.

Do not like either set of rules. Hate it that they differ in the playoffs. That is BS. You paly by the same rules, no matter what.

I feel, as others, either the team gets one more posession aafter the other team scores, or just play the 15 minutes. Keep it simple.

I'm glad they did something but it's stupid there are different rules for regular and post. Both should be the same.

I'm surprised many here have an issue with a different set of rules for the playoffs.

For me that's not the issue. The issue is a new set of rules that fundamentaly changes HOW the game is played and in a way we've never seen in pro football.

Gaining possesion of the ball in overtime after the other team scores a FG knowing you have to score a FG or TD. Field possition and time remaining are of no consideration.

That's an odd circumstance that has never existed in profootball before and that's my issue. You've changed the game too much.

The best solution as I see it is an 8 minute overtime period.

But I still agree with the current format for the regular season. Time issues with the networks and wear and tear on the players don't make it worth while playing the extra time. IMO

The playoffs are different and require a better set of OT rules.

+1 I like the playoff format. I like the idea of sudden death as long as it's not on a FG.

The same set of rules should apply for both the regular season and playoffs. If both teams are going to get at least one chance with the ball in OT during the playoffs the same rule should apply to the regular season.

Don't know why so many of you are hung up on the OT rules being different in the post season since they always have been. NFL has never allowed ties in the playoffs as they do in the regular season. That's different!

True. Besides it is not coming as a surprise both teams know the rules ahead of time. I see no advantage for one team over the other so since that is the case I have no problem with it.

The Coin toss thing; its shown that the winning side only gets about 2% advantage; so that is BS claiming that means anything.

So what is wrong with Sudden Death; which is the way it has been for over 30 years in the regular season and over 70 years in the playoffs.

All this whining and crying about being fair; both sides had a chance to get it done in regulation. Sudden Death was MEANT to put pressure on BOTH sides from the first second to end the game. THAT is the way it should REMAIN.

I'm not hung up on the OT rules being different this is the first time I've ever given an option on it. It really doesn't make that much difference to me I just feel the same OT rules should apply to both the playoffs and regular season.

You can't allow ties in the playoffs one team has to win and move on there's a good reason there's a difference there. Ties can be figured into a 16 game regular season a half game can determine a division winner or a wilcard spot.

Yes I know this.:lmao2: But that doesn't mean you have to allow ties in the regulatr season and the NFL always has. Point I made was that we've always had a different set of rules for OT in the playoffs.

The OT rules for the playoffs have been the same for at least 60 years. 1958 Colts/Giants Championship Game. Then it was in the 80's I think that they used the SAME OT rules for regular season.

It has only been in the last couple that they changed the OT rules for the playoffs.

If you don't allow ties during the regular season a game could last another quarter or two before a winner is determined. Teams involved in a lengthy OT could be at a disadvantage the following week especially if they have a Thursday night game coming up or are playing on Thanksgiving.

A regular season is 16 games long and no need putting players at further risk of injury playing OT's until you have a winner. Like I said you can figure in ties during the regular season but playoff games must have a winner so the point you made was silly.
