Someone on a different site asked the question ...Do You Love Fottball (or soMething like that). I thought it would be interesting to determine some opinions on this MB ...

Here was my take ...

While I love "American" Football, many of you who claim you like the sport, really don't. Ok settle down and lsten to me...

I'm sure most of you are true football enthusiasts who place the game ahead of most other sports -- I believe I heard something on a sports channel that quoted over 33% of us (Americans) prefer football Over other sports.
But ...how can you cliam to appreciate football and hate teams that you declare as "rivals?" It's just oxymoronic to love the game, but hate teams in the game that ... 1) difficult to defeat; 2) have players that are gift and talented, yet play well against your team; 3) because the fans of a particular opponent team don't measure up to your standards or have different perspectives; or for whatevever reason you deem ...you hate, dislike or would never root for that franchise.
Let's take it a step further ...I'll admit there's a certain amount of fun involved with playfully busting chops, or a little trash talk (talking trash; whichever you prefer), but if you take a closer look at some the posters on any (emphasis placed on any MB (because you can find that type of fan in any message board), you'll find posters who really take
things personal; their posts/threads are incongruent with football dialogue, and I'm convinced that they actually mean it when they say they Hate the Cowboys, Commanders, Giants, etc ...
Personally, I'd like to see American football in other countries; similar to what's going on in basketball. Hence, I'd like to see American football entered into the Olympics; similar to the World Cup Soccer (Europena football).
The Japanese Suns versus the American Star (comprised of America's best)
The German Red Barons against the Chinese Wall
You get the picture. I'd also like to see some of the rules in American football changed ...expand the field of play; equipment changes, less positions/players on the field -- I believe it's too crowded, which contributes to injuries.
Yeah, I love the sport, and I like all the teams in the NFL; some more than others though :rolleyes:

Passion. How can you sit there and say you like the skins and Cowboys? How?

If you love your eagirls, part of being a fan is hating the skins and Cowboys.

I dont understand this post or what you are asking. How can we hate the eagirls and skins and call ourselves real sports fans. Thats part of the game. Without rivalries, whats Texas/OU - Notre Dame/Michigan - Army/Navy - Cowboys/Skins.

I mean how can you call yourself a fan and profess to liking the Boys? Thats anti-american. Part of being a Cowboys fan entails rooting against the skins and Eagirls in almost any situtation. How can it be any other way?

That would only be Eagles fans for the most part :D

But really what fun would the game be without the rivalries and the bragging rights when a game is done. While I enjoy the game for the pure artistry of a great throw and catch or a long run, the "Jacked Up" type big hits and the strategy of the game it just would not be the same without the rivalries. All of the stands would be quiet except for the occasional Oooo and Ahhh when a big play is made and there would be no excitement. No thanks.

I don't care that much for Pro Football other than the Cowboys- I really do HATE some teams (Philly is NOT one of them). I doubt I watch more than half an hour of any of the remaining games, especially if Carolina loses (they are my home team- so I defer to them when the Cowboys aren't around). I do love watching College football, however, but the NFL without the Cowboys can kiss my.

Football is the same as any sport. Fans will worship their team and detest their rivals.

It's part of being human.

Cowboys = America
Commanders = Russia
Eagles = China
Cardinals = Sweden

I think it all depends on whether you see yourself as a football fan or a Cowboys, Eagles, etc. fan. Yes, fans of teams are supposed to be ardent in their passion, but fans of the game itself, who do not live in any of the cities where the teams are, can enjoy the game regardless of which team wins, as long as they get to see good football, even if the have their favorite teams. I like the Cowboys but I love the game of football even more than I like any given team.

Maybe the fans need the passion of the game so they have an outlet for their frustrations so they don't take it out on their families as much. They're elated with a win and sad and mad for days after a loss. By cheering their hearts out during a game they are letting go of a lot of pent-up tension and will feel better after a win. I wonder if there are extra traffic and road rage incidents and fights and arguments in cities whose team loses a game over the usual amount? Probably.

Ever notice that after a game, the players are hugging and congratulating each other and the fans are duking it out in the stands and parking lots? We're not the only ones, look at the English soccer fans.

I used to be a rabid, manic Cowboys fan until I realized how bad it was to be around me during a game or for days afterward if the Boys lost. I finally decided it was in my own best interest and my families if I toned down my emotional involvement in games where I had no say in the outcome. Why should my family bear the brunt of my dissatisfaction with something that wasn't even part of my family?

I became a much better person to be around during games and even managed to cultivate a pretty fair level of tolerance for other teams and their players and fans. I enjoy the games so much more now.

It all depends on how you see yourself...enjoy the playoffs. I will no matter who wins. My family will enjoy the games, too.

Good points. there is a difference between a rabid team fan and an NFL fan.

Generally on a team board like this, you will find 90-95% of the fans are rabid team fans, this case Cowboy fans. To these fans, we live and die by our teams success and failures.

I used to be more miserable when the boys lost, crying and pple would not talk to me till tuesdays, and all that. It fades with age and you just accept it, I no longer blow up and get hostile. I no longer throw things or break things, all things I have done in the past. Its call maturization. Becoming mature and responsible. It will find its proper level and remain there forever.

I am as passionate as ever and sometimes hurt as ever, but I keep it all in perspective. Nothing wrong with being a passionate fan. Just have to realilze your actions effect others, including pple you dont even know.

To be honest, I'm more a Cowboys fan than a football fan. As a neutral observer, I prefer soccer and enjoy hockey just as much.

Don't hate the Eagles...hate their fans:p:

Only the best players for the Olympics, meaning NFL, or noone would care- see NBA/NHL in Olympics

Less players on the field- see arena ball.

Larger field- see soccer

New equipment- Like?

I don't need to see a Chinese football team(roster sizes approaching 400) No middle east football(camels running onto the field, too many nicknames containing 'the mad bomber', and the cheerleaders wouldn't be all that hot) A French team would be considered an automatic bye, a Denmark team would attract too many American free agents, no need for a Mexican team as Texas has too many teams as it is....

I hate the Eagles more now than ever. They really layed down last week and handed the game to the Skins.

I hope they get thrashed next year too. I think they will reside in the cellar with a losing record for the next 5 years.
