Do you tip or not on a to-go order?

This is something I struggle with.

My opinion of a tip is a ''thank you for the great service'', but it seems that the restaurant industry has become so heavily dependent on tips for their waiting staff it's almost sad to not tip someone just because.

This question is specifically geared towards restaurants like Chili's, Applebees, Olive Garden, Texas Roadhouse, etc...

Thoughts?

You know what, I did this once, got home and something was missing from my order. So, when we order from these places, and go to pick it up, we do not tip. This is mainly because no matter how small it is, something is wrong with the order.

Yes, 100% you tip. Someone has to get your order ready. Tip or don't eat out, I say.

I think I misread his post, I thought he meant when they called in the order and went to pick it up to eat at home.

You're correct, that's what I meant.

I do, but not the standard 20%. (I'm not cheap like big dog cowboy ;) ) :laugh2:

I generally tip about $2 (maybe $3 depending) unless I'm picking up a large order. (ie, not just an order for pickup for my family)

If it's a to go order and they bring it to my car I will tip. If I have to go inside to pick up my order I don't.

I tip for the "to go" preping and extras they add that aren't standard on eating in. (bagging it, (plastic) silverware, etc). Like I said earlier. $2.

...places, but I do tip for every service.

Food, Maitre 'D, hotel maid service, bar mixologist, bell man, airport lounge and car lots. Everybody is trying to make a living.

LOL. You're right though. You don't tip as much unless you want to. But 2-3 bucks is about right if you axe me.

Of course you do. 2-3 bucks or something. Treat people right. You got enough money to eat out then you have enough to throw a few dollars the staff's way.

I'd only tip to go if the attendant went above and beyond, I don't see the point in tipping when I'm the one that ends up unpacking, serving and cleaning up after the meal.

For example, there's a place I used to go to at my old job where the attendant would actually have a conversation with me, ask if I wanted anything extra, etc and I'd happily tip even if I was just taking an order to go.

However I've been to places where outside of asking me what I want, the attendant didn't do a damn thing else. I'd have to go get my own condiments, fill my own drink, get my own condiments, etc. Why on earth would I tip for that?

I will never tip for takeout, ever. I draw a line through the tip section of the receipt actually.

What is this world coming to where now we are expected to tip someone for putting some napkins and forks in a bag? I'm a very generous tipper when I eat out but IMO it's ridiculous to think you deserve a tip for that. That's not a service.
