Uh oh, another tip thread...

I will never tip for takeout, ever. I draw a line through the tip section of the receipt actually.

What is this world coming to where now we are expected to tip someone for putting some napkins and forks in a bag? I'm a very generous tipper when I eat out but IMO it's ridiculous to think you deserve a tip for that. That's not a service.

I agree.

I used to load trees and mulch into peoples cars at a nursery all summer during high school; in the Texas heat I may add. I rarely ever got tipped for that. Why should I tip the person who prints my receipt and hands me my food to go?

What's the point of tipping a take-out order? It would never even occur to me.

If you have to ask if you should tip. Then most likely you should.

Tip for what? You're picking up something that they get paid for making...they did nothing except the job they're paid to do.

This is false, most of the time.

I've been a server for almost 10 years. I don't expect to be tipped for togo, I honestly don't even ask ToGo orders to fill out the total lines, just sign, that being said, your attitude towards it is pretty awful. I've worked at 3 dine in restaurants that did take out, Dennys, Chilis, and TGIF. At all 3 of those places the To Go employee made whatever the tipped wage minimum was ($4.19 atm).

Tipping ToGo has nothing to do with the person feeling they "deserve" it. They simply make next to nothing if you don't. Not all places are like this, some places the Togo employees make Minimum wage, but most casual restaurants don't have a dedicated Togo Staff on hand at all times, generally only during the busiest hours.

If you're not doing take out during the Dinner hours, your order is probably being taken care of by a regular wait staff employee, and very begrudgingly. I can say first hand it sucks having to take time away from my tables (the people who DO and SHOULD tip) to answer the phone, put your order in, then put all your crap together for you, and make sure you have everything you need, and then cash you out. That's a lot of time I could be spending filling up drinks for my tables, or even getting them some.. ranch dressing.

Again, I don't mind to go orders not tipping, my beef is more with how restaurants operate. Someone should be on hand to handle those at all times, and make a fair wage.

However, next time you're at a restaurant and you're staring at an empty drink on your table, just think that it's very possible your server got stuck answering the phone (that no one else would pick up cause they dread having to do ToGo's) and has to put together some 50$ ToGo orders, while dealing with people who call to order while having no menu, and ask you "What do you have" and "how much does this cost" taking up valuable time they could be using to refill that drink on your table.

Just something to think about.

Great rule of Thumb to live by. A few dollars isn't going to hurt you, but it'll improve another persons day.

This is exactly why I asked the question.

The restaurant industry has become so reliant on tips, that it's difficult not to tip on a to-go order because you know the person is making less than the regular min wage. But at the same time, the concept of a tip to me is a ''thank you'' for great service.

It's as if the concept of a tip has gone out the window and it might as well be written onto the check as a waiting staff fee.

I don't. I figure that it's the same as drive through but I have to get out of the car. And I'd never tip at a Whataburger or McDonalds drive through.

That's what I was going to say next. I you are saying you should tip to go, then you better be tipping McDonald's people and what not, especially since they don't get tips for waiting tables. I mean since its apparently the customers job to make up for their potentially lousy pay.

If it's someplace that my wife and I like that we always order from, then sure, I tip.

They remember you. They begin packing you gargantuan portioned meals. My food always has the extras just the way we like it.

If it's some random joint probably not.

Unless I'm hanging out for a while and having drinks, I won't tip on a to-go order.

Those are all fair points.

It's not just about them not deserving it though. It's the principle. Why start tipping everyone for the tiniest service? I was having this exact conversation with my cousin who is 21 and works at an ice cream joint and can walk away with $30 in tips. I don't understand it.

I never call in an order without knowing exactly what I want or having a menu in front of me.

As far as the tip....if they are bringing it out to my car I will tip but if I have to go in then I rarely tip.

I don't tip on to-go orders either. Their tip was the gas I drove to pick it up myself.

Again, to be fair, McDonalds Employees get paid minimum wage. On Average the people making your ToGo order are not.

To each their own. I don't think there is anything wrong with not tipping for ToGo. Even though I work in the industry, I find it kind of silly. I certainly appreciate a tip now and then, and many people do tip.

If you order ToGo from the same place often, I suggest tipping. We have good memories when it comes to people who tip well. If we know you/your order we will generally go above and beyond to give you everything you need without you having to request it. This is just good practice for any hospitality place you visit often.
