Do you want to stay 3-4 or go 4-3?

I'm not sure of any extra picks we have but just 1-7 we could go

1) Fairley
2) Best OT available
3) FS
4) OLB
5) OG
6) BPA
7) BPA

Now obviously Jerry has NEVER gone according to need after the 1st round. He often takes off the wall picks, but we could always hope.

Also depending on Free Agency we can take stop gaps to fill the OLB needs if we'd be missing one. We have at the minimum 7 of our 11 already here most likely so it wouldn't be throwing away a draft. We would be building a dominant defense and it can't get any worse than it is now.

I think between FA and the draft it's doable while still adding a couple of OL. Now if that is an example of how the draft could go then I agree, but I definitely wouldn't go into the draft just targeting an OL in round 2 or a FS in round 3 and so on. That said, I do think someone like Fairley would be our pick at #6. And I also have seen the first 2 rounds are deep at OT, so there is a good chance we could get an OT in the 2nd who would also be one of the best players available. The rest of the draft I would look for FS, OL, CB, etc but not target any for a particular round.

But, I think Jerry is married to the 3-4. He even choose our last HC based on wanting a 3-4 expert. That's the main reason we got stuck with Wade. So while I'd have no problem going back to the 4-3, it's obvious he's entrenched with the 3-4.

To transition to the 4-3. We'd need two starting caliber outside linebackers (I'm just going to assume Sean Lee can hack it as the starting MLB), someone who can back them up, and a backup middle linebacker. That is the absolute minimum. Where exactly are these guys in free agency? In all likelihood you're looking at bringing in some jags (which defeats the entire purpose of the switch) rather that legitimate impact players unless you draft someone (which is also an uncertain scenario). Regardless of how the resources are distributed to accomplish this, be it money or draft picks, it's an idiotic proposition.

Like I posted above, I think it's doable, but I also know Jerry's married to the 3-4, so any talk is a moot point.

We are not seitching to the 3-4 and for good reasons. Multiple good reasons.

I would like to have a guy who invents a new formation based on speed and aggression and doesn't rely on either the 4-3 or the 3-4. A form of a Nickel that Zone blitzes the passer and plays gap contains would suit me fine.

I don't understand this garbage about needing to address the defense with the entire draft if we go back to a 4-3. All we would need is an outside backer. Ware and Spencer would work at DE, Brent and Rat at DT. Lee could play weak side with Brady in the middle. it really wouldn't take that much of a change of personnel (at the starting level) at all.

3-4, 4-3, zone blitz, cover 2, man under with safeties deep, prevent. blah blah blah. How about we try this. TACKLE THE GUY WITH DAMN BALL! HIT 'EM IN THE MOUTH. Do we have any players on D that could just do that? If you're a great player, you can play in any D. Do guys like LT, Singletary, Butkus, Nitscke, Lambert, Lott care if they played in a 3-4 or a 4-3?

Why is it that we could go from the 4-3 to 3-4 in one offseason, but now whenever someone mentions going back to the 4-3 you get a ton of people saying we can't do it, we're too far into it, we don't have the personnel, etc.?

The OP isn't far off. A free agent signing or two and then a couple of draft picks and we'd be well on our way to reverting back to the 4-3.

Of course we can go from 3-4 to 4-3 in one off season. Just like we went from a 4-3 to 3-4 in one off season.

That's how every team does it. They do it in one off season and the first season after the switch, they suck. Just like we did in 2004.

That's the problem.

So if you really think switching back to a 4-3 is worth it, that's the price.

We won't be switching back to a 4-3 any time soon.

I think were already seeing a lot of this.

I also think we made the right choice in 2004.

In todays game, the 3-4 puts you in a superor position for a bunch of reasons:
It's a little easier to stack the roster and cover for injuries.
As I see it, a 3-4 has 3 basic type players.
DL, ILB, OLB. DE's and NTs in a 3-4 have a similar role.
In a 4-3 you have more defined roles.

What appears to work best defensively in todays game is speed and deception.

I want more 3-4 sized LBs and fewer DL. 3-4, 2-5, 2-4, 1-5 alignments work better.

Some major upgrades are needed, specifically on the DLine and Strongside OLB. Bradie James gets another chance due to his improved play over the last 7 games.

Chris Canty and Greg Ellis - we miss you both. We talk about how bad Wade's blitzes are but Bradie James had 11 sacks in two seasons playing with those guys under Wade's scheme. When we decided to go with Igor and Spencer, he's got 2 sacks in those two seasons. The numbers don't lie!

Jerry Jones the coach errr I mean the GM said Dallas was sticking with the 3-4....

Mostly because the best player on our team is the best 3-4 OLB in the world. I wouldn't want to change that either.

I'm not understanding these 3-4, 4-3 threads all the time. Here's what I know. Jerry I'm pretty sure said he was going to stick with the 3-4 so arguing this is just for fun. Also, wouldn't it be easier to try and obtain an elite 3-4 coach instead doing a wholesale change and moving player positions around? I mean, Jerruh is talking about "hitting the ground running next year." Get someone off the Lebeau / Belichick tree.

I am definitely not an X and O guy but I think that Ware, Spencer and Ratliff could all play DE in a 4-3 and Spears,Bowen, Brent Price and Ratliff could play DT. There could be a good rotation there and I think all you would have to do is get an OLB in FA but I don't really care if we switch or not. The front 7 scheme is not the problem with the Cowboys, it is the back 4!

If Capers is the target is it possible that we stick with Pasq for another year if Capers is not available? I hope not - I would rather try someone new and see if they work out - maybe Thurman - I don't think there is any chance it could get worse than it is now!

No to the spawn of Buddy.

Merely pointing out that he coaches the type of amorphous defense you described. My choice for DC is John Mitchell.
