‘Drift Away’ singer Dobie Gray dies at 69
By JOE EDWARDS December 7, 2011 2:24PM
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Dobie Gray, who died Tuesday at 69, was more than a smooth balladeer who recorded the timeless hit “Drift Away” in 1973.
He was a songwriter for an array of country and pop performers, a trailblazing entertainer in South Africa and, in death, a philanthropist.
Mr. Gray died in his sleep at his Nashville home after a long battle with cancer.
