"The Ancient One - The character who would eventually become the Ancient One was born in Kamar-Taj, Tibet, more than 500 years ago. He spent his youth as a peaceful farmer, until his friend Kaluu discovered the power of magic."

Yup, forget that, its better to have a bald, and extremely non Asian (English Woman) for that role. Think that will hurt this movie more than some realize.

Tilda Swinton has what I call dead eyes or shark eyes. Every time I see her in a movie, looking at her eyes she just looks soulless ...if that makes sense.

What..?

Who..??

Why the bloody heck is Tilda Swinton playing The Ancient One??? Before a female forum member takes offense to my objecting Swinton's casting, please know I have zero problems with an actress playing the role that has always been written for a man. Michelle Yeoh would have been a PERFECT choice for a female Ancient One.

Maybe the film will excel with or despite Swinton but I can't shake the sense that she's going to deliver another Constantine-like performance again. Next thing you know they'll be pronouncing Wong's name to fit Asian audiences like they did Aang for The Last Airbender.

It actually sounds funny when I say it, but this is the first comic book character movie that may have trouble translating to film. I've seen pictures of Benedict in full costume and it just isn't convincing to me.

The first? Doctor Strange may falter from poor adaptation but it won't be the first. I can think of Howard The Duck or The Punisher as 80's movies that were D.O.A. off the top of my head. :)

Yep, those were pretty bad. But you didn't love Dolph as Frank Castle? ;)

I like him as Castle about as much as I do my ulcer, lol. Couldn't stand Ray Stevenson either but did tolerate Thomas Jane's portrayal. Thank goodness for Jon Bernthal. He did a wonderful job as Castle on Netflix's DareDevil. I hope his example can serve as a template for the character in the future.

I liked her in Constantine, also thought she was great in Snowpiercer. She's a very talented actress. Comics are kind of below her, I do enjoy her slumming though.

Are we sure Tilda is even playing a woman? She's known for being androgynous, it wouldn't be the first time she's played a dude.

She's also an amazing actress, if that matters.

So far, the trailers look good to me. Like a mix between Constantine & Inception.

Perhaps the role is male. Perhaps the role is female. Nonetheless, Swinton is female.

I do not have an objection of the role's sexual orientation. How closely an accomplished actor or actress matches the attributes of a particular role does score brownie points for me.

Yeoh isn't from Tibet, is she? I mean if the idea is people want someone closer to the source, then they'd have to dig up an old guy from Tibet that can act. Or is "Asian" close enough?

I'm not trying to pick a fight, just saying the old wise mystical Asian guy is kind of a stereotype that's been done to death already, no?
