Does Anybody Know Wade's Drafting History?

Hey guys, I was just wondering if anybody knew how Wade has drafted in the past as HC.

I would think being a DC, he has drafted exclusively defense. With so many picks and free agents already on defense, I was thinking maybe Wade would go offense in the 1st or 2nd round.

What do you guys think?

He has always drafted defense in the 1st.

There is a thread somewhere about it, very detailed.

Thanks for the info, this probably means we go defense again this year in the 1st.

As I said in another thread after breaking down his drafts. His track record is pretty putrid. I sure hope Ireland runs the show this year.

Not a very fair critique when you consider he was only in Denver 2 years and Buffalo 3. You draft players to fit your system. If your system isn't around in year 2-4 of their career, their odds of being replaced by the next coach are dramatically higher.

I don't think you can totally credit him for a draft or totally fault him for one, but as Reeves says the guy knows talent you have to thingk that he was at least a part of the process.

93 Denver

At 11, You'd expect to land a good starter in the first, a good backup to passible starter in the second, and a pair of good useful backups/spot players with the thirds. Now obviously teams miss early and hit late, but that is overall what you'd expect to yeild.

1 (11, 11) - Dan Williams, Toledo - 7 year career, but only the first two under wade. Well thought of big athletic DE who washed out in denver (injury issues were a part of that if I recall) only to throw up a 10.5 and a 7 sack season in KC when put into a scheme that fit him more. A good pick, just unlucky for Denver.
2 (14, 43) - Glyn Milburn, Stanford - 3rd down back/ kick returner. limited use out of the backfeild, but had a 9 year career as a return man. Not what you want at that spot, but maybe if Phillips is not fired, his use as a change of pace guy and reciever out of the backfeild increase instead of dropping off after his 3rd season.
3 (13, 69) - Rondell Jones, North Carolina - 5 year career. Nothing special, but it is hard to say conclusively that he just sucked. His most productive season was Phillips' last.
3 (14, 70) - Jason Elam, Hawaii - 13 good years.
4 (14, 98) - Jeff Robinson, Idaho - 12 years. Useful player.
5 (14, 126) - Kevin Williams, UCLA
6 (14, 154) - Melvin Bonner, Baylor - I liked this guy as a prospect, but he didn't work out. 1 year.
7 (1, 169) - Clarence Williams, Washington State
7 (14, 182) - Antonius Kimbrough, Jackson State
8 (14, 210) - Brian Stablein, Ohio State

Not a good draft, but it did yeild a + starter in Williams, a +longtime kicker in Elam, and 2 +special team players. That isn't a bad draft in any way.

94 Denver

With a 2nd and a 4th, you should HOPE to get a starter (or at least a good backup) and hopefully a contributor.

2 (22, 51) - Allen Aldridge, Houston - an 8 year NFL player. Was a very well thought of athlete. Only played a single year for Phillips.
4 (20, 123) - Randy Fuller, Tennessee State - 6 year NFL player.
7 (16, 210) - Keith Burns, Oklahoma State - 12 year NFL player
7 (18, 212) - Butler By'not'e, Ohio State - 2 year NFL player. KR
7 (24, 218) - Tom Nalen, Boston College - 12 year NFL player. Started many a game.

That is quite honestly an excellent draft for the picks available.

98 Bills?

You'd expect a good backup to decent starter in the second, and a good useful backups/spot player with the third.

2 (9, 39) - Sam Cowart, Florida State - 8 seasons
3 (7, 68) - Robert Hicks, Mississippi State - 3 seasons.
5 (8, 131) - Jonathan Linton, North Carolina - 3 seasons. 1999 was quite good. I don't know this guy's history. Perhaps the regime change cut his career possibilities down.
6 (7, 160) - Fred Coleman, Washington
7 (9, 198) - Victor Allotey, Indiana
7 (49, 238) - Kamil Loud, Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo - 2 seasons

Pretty much what you'd expect without a first.

1999 Bills

At 23, You'd expect to land a decent starter in the first, a good backup in the second, and a backups/spot player in the third and you'd hope to hit someone useul with one of the fourths.

1 (23, 23) - Antoine Winfield, Ohio State - 7 year career. solid player.
2 (22, 53) - Peerless Price, Tennessee - 7 year career, most of it as an above average starter.
3 (25, 86) - Shawn Bryson, Tennessee - Very solid backup with 6 good years.
4 (24, 119) - Keith Newman, North Carolina - 7 year player. 8 sacks in 2000.
4 (27, 122) - Bobby Collins, North Alabama - 3 year career.
5 (23, 156) - Jay Foreman, Nebraska - 7 year career
6 (25, 194) - Armon Hatcher, Oregon State
7 (24, 230) - Sheldon Jackson, Nebraska - 3 year career.
7 (42, 248) - Bryce Fisher, Air Force

Again, a solid draft. These guys had long careers even though the system they were drafted to play in was not in place.

2000 Bills

At 26, You'd expect to land a decent starter in the first, a good backup in the second, and a backup/spot player in the third.

1 (26, 26) - Erik Flowers, Arizona State - a solidly considered athletic DE as a draft pick. Played 1 year under phillips. Never really made a dent in the pros, but did play for 5 years as 3 teams tried to find the right button. It isn't unreasonable to think that a defensive expert like Phillips might have found the right button with him with more time.
2 (27, 58) - Travares Tillman, Georgia Tech - 5 years. nothing special.
3 (27, 89) - Corey Moore, Virginia Tech - drafted as a project converting from DE. One year in Buffalo and 1 game in Miami.
4 (27, 121) - Avion Black, Tennessee State - 3 year career. Modest return man.
5 (27, 156) - Sammy Morris, Texas Tech - 6 year player. Solid backup who finally got off the bench in miami and did some damage.
6 (28, 194) - Leif Larsen, Texas-El Paso - 2 years.
7 (27, 233) - Drew Haddad, Buffalo
7 (45, 251) - DaShon Polk, Arizona - 6 years.

I think that if Phillips was a LEVYesque pillar in Buffalo, maybe you see a lot more from this draft in his system over time. It is not inconceiveable that Flowers, Tillman, and Moore might have been developed by Phillips. As it is, this is, IMO, his only draft that looks poor today, and even this one yeilded SOMETHING concrete (a good backup in Sammy Morris). I would say in addition to 3 prospects for his defensive system.

I don't see anything here that makes me worry about our drafts, especially since we have gobs of DE types already.

It will be very interesting to see how we draft this year and what positions do we attempt to fill. If sign Diehlman as our starting RG that's an immediately pro bowl equivalent starting RG but he will command top dollar; same goes for Steinbech(sp?). We could look at the 2nd tier particularly 1-2 guys who very close to the top tier (can't remember names but they were ranked high by one of the ranking FA prospects list). If we go OG in the draft, unless the guy an immediate starter we better hope Procter is good enough to start for us immediately.
