That's why QB are protected during kneel downs. Teams don't give up possession of the ball.

...can run upright as long as he has two hands on the ball and therock squarely in his gut.

What I saw was the ball in the crease of his right elbow hanging out the right side of his body.

???It was the bloody two yard line - it's not like Bettis was going to shake and bake his way ala Barry Sanders.

yeah, that was mentally ******** of Bettis. It didn't matter if he got in or not, all that mattered was hanging on to the ball. They would've used up all of Indy's Timeouts and burnt the clock if he doesn't get in. The only possible way for Indy to pull it out was a TO right there.
Give it up to Big Ben, he saved that game by taking off upfield and not letting dude get by him. That would've been the ballgame.
