Does Chaz Green to LG mean Cooper has failed?

Broaddus recently tweeted that, based on his observations at OTAs, Jonathan Cooper has looked stiff at LG and that his injuries have robbed him of the athleticism he was drafted for. The move of Chaz Green to LG, and him appearing on the first team, seems to confirm this. If so, this is a pretty big shame. I thought Cooper had a chance to resurrect his career between Tyron and Fred and give us a cheap, but effective, replacement for Leary. I don't trust Green to do that for any length of time, given his injury history.

No. It's OTAs. With Free retiring and Cooper/Green unknowns, they're probably just trying out different combinations to see who settles in comfortably at a position and to see if there's possible position flex.

For example, if Cooper or Green has some position flex, they can go shorter at OL when cutting to 53 and maybe keep an extra guy at another position, like CB, WR, or RB, where there might be an embarrassment of riches w/r/t talent come late August.

Edit: it's also Broaddus, so take his comments with a heaping serving of the saltiest sea salt money can buy.

Good points. Just not sure why Green is being trotted out with the starters.

Haven't seen the tweet you're referring to.

I believe Cooper is at center, not because he isn't doing well at guard, but because they want him to backup Frederick if anything happens. He doesn't have enough experience at center right now, so giving him as much as possible increases his value. If anything, I would say it is a good sign for him. If he isn't first team LG in training camp or preseason, that would be another story.

Sorry, was a mailbag response by Broaddus, not a tweet:

I understand we want our best five guys playing on the offensive line. With that being said what do you feel the odds are for Jonathan Cooper to recapture his from that made him the seventh overall pick. I also understand that this might require La'el Collins to play right tackle. Do you think this would give our O-line a chance to be even better this year?

Bryan: Just watching him move around I don't see it. There is just too much stiffness. While he was at North Carolina when he was in space he was so athletic. Injury has robbed him of that mobility.

Because it's OTAs -- LG and RT aren't settled. Might as well see who looks good. The OL has to function as one big unit...Green might not do as well at RT but maybe the whole line meshes better with him at LG?

If he's got the strength, too, it'll be better for him to stick inside and protect Dak from the bull rush instead of being out on the edge and getting whipped by defensive ends. I mean...he can't be worse than Free, though, in my opinion.

Broaddus, lol...he's such a salty old dog, man. He was blisteringly wrong about Bosa and even about Kelvin Benjamin (weight issues notwithstanding).

Yea, I dislike him as a scout. But he is the only one with eyes on. And it doesn't take a scout to see if a guard is stiff and unathletic compared to others.

My opinion here as I think RT is settled. Collins is gonna be the starter. LG they are just getting a feel and giving all the options a chance.

Cooper looked fine last year,i would hold off till TC to see where he is at right now.If he is bad he will stick out like a sore thumb on our Line.

To me his, "I don't see it" is in answer to the question about him recapturing his college form. He didn't specifically say he wouldn't be a solid LG.

Plus, Broaddus can be spectacularly wrong on any number of subjects. I put no weight on his opinions, particularly relating to the draft.

Broaddus also apparently said Jaylon Smith was showing signs of the injury and yet every reporter at practice today basically said if you didn't know Smith had an issue you wouldn't have been able to tell from drills.

I think Broaddus sometimes thinks he's the smartest man in the room.

Broaddus isn't even the smartest man in the room when he's on the toilet.

In any event, experiments don't fail during OTAs. I'm sure they're just looking at options. But I do think Green deserves a real shot to compete for playing time when he's healthy. Cooper, too, for that matter. Either one of these guys, or both, should be able to hold down an OG spot.

He didn't like Smith before Dallas drafted him. He wanted Jack (who did Jack as a rookie).

I've noticed that he isn't one to change his opinion on a player. He's more interested in saying, "I told you so".

Broaddus will be negative on Smith until he has no choice but to be positive.

I have more confidence in OL Coach, Frank Pollack and the offensive staff than I do in Broaddus to determine who's fit to start and who's not.

Chances are, they'll manage to develop 'em and come up with a sound decision as to who to trust on the OL. They've surely done well so far.
