In a recent interview, T.O. was asked “Do you feel added pressure as a team to win this year?”. T.O.’s response was “I don't think it's any pressure, I think everyone knows what is expected of them, especially the guys coming back from last year. If there is any pressure to be felt, I'm sure it's the new guys trying to adjust to make the team. Other than that, it's just readjusting themselves to the professional ranks of football. It's not college anymore. You're not on scholarship. Everyone is gunning for a position. As far as pressure, there is none as far as the guys coming back from last year”.
Does it bother you that T.O. says there is no pressure on this team? It bothers me. I mean, of course players are all gunning for a position and know what is expected of them. That’s true for every NFL pro player. But a true leader should put more on himself; a true leader should want the pressure; he would welcome the extra expectations of winning s Super Bowl on his shoulders; now that’s pressure.
True leaders should seek the kind of "accountability needed to win" that builds pressure. False leaders take the lax, feel-good, loosy-goosy approach. Having too many veterans on a team with the “there’s no pressure on us" attitude is troubling because it’s a sign of lacking leadership, and this team has been characteristic of that in the past . That’s the same kind of attitude that leads to lazy play that leads to the December and postseason slides, like the ones this team has seen the last few years. And seeing signs that this kind of lazy mindset is still held by veteran players is quite troubling to me. JNHO
