Does Jerry already have a trade worked out with Bill & Jeff?

From right out of Jerry's mouth yeesterday, the Pac Man trade has been dead in the water for over a week. What changed all of a sudden? Maybe Jerry believes he's already got a tentative deal in place to recoup the 4th rounder.

t's believed that there are four players the Dolphins have targeted as their ideal second draftee, and the Dolphins might package a combination of draft picks to get in range for on Saturday.

Two of them - Florida's Derrick Harvey and Auburn's Quentin Groves - are defensive ends who will likely be converted to pass rushing outside linebackers, possibly replacing Taylor if he's moved.

The other two are believed to be Michigan's Chad Henne and Delaware's Joe Flacco, two of this draft's elite quarterbacks, who happen to be rated right behind Boston College's Matt Ryan. The Dolphins have done an extensive amount of research on all four players according to sources.

Harvey's projected to go in the top half of the first round. Groves, Henne and Flacco might be available if the Dolphins stay pat, keeping the No. 32 pick. They also might be drafted a few spots earlier, which could be the source of the Dolphins desires to trade up.

The Jets, Ravens, Titans, Chiefs, Packers, Vikings, Bears, Panthers, and Falcons are teams in need of quarterback help, and the Dolphins could be trying to move ahead of Green Bay (No. 30), and teams like Atlanta, Baltimore and Chicago that might be trying to acquire San Diego's first round pick (No. 27) to get Henne or Flacco.

Jerry said he was looking forward to doing some wheeling and dealing with Jeff and Bill.

Since Miami already has a first pick in the draft every round, their 3rd rounder is almost the the same as a late 2nd rounder. Their 4th rounder is almost the same as a late 3rd rounder. I imagine all you could get to drop from #28 to #32 is Miami's 4th rounder (maybe some late round throw aways here and there to balance out point totals). Which would more than recoup the pick they spent on Pac Man.

it's a 4th round pick. I don't think jerry is gonna trade so he can recoup a 4th round pick.

I think Jerry was flat lying yesterday. I doubt anything dramatic happened today, except that the draft got a day closer.

But I am sure they've at least talked about certain scenarios with the shorter time on the clock this year.

Interesting theory, but I've also read that several teams in the late first round have talked about trading down.

I wouldn't have a problem with it, especially if they were to draft Cason at #22.

They could drop from #28 to #32 and end up getting Pacman for nuthin'!

There they could probably have their pick of several top receivers or possibly get Ray Rice.

(I would anyway!)

A player that the team may think highly of may drop to the 4th round but not survive to the fifth round. I think it is important to have a 4th round selection for your own "sleepers".

If possible, they should try to recoup it if available trade partners are available and we are secure we can drop down some spots and still get the guy we want.

Yep. In 2006, Jerry traded down from our second to get the 4th we'd lost in the Canty deal, and it seemed like he had already made up his mind to get that 4th.

We could've drafted Marcus McNeil or Greg Jennings with that pick, too.

Why not? He's done that 2 or 3 times before. In fact he did it last year once.

Ummm, SCREW RECOUPING THE 4TH ROUND PICK!! Why is everyone wanting to "recoup" that pick? Why not just trade down and get a higher pick?? Do you think that Jerry is only going to trade down if he can recoup the 4th round pick? When I'm thinking trade down scenarios, they are all involving higher than 4th round picks. Like, let's trade one of our firsts for two 2nd rounders. At that point, who would care about a 4th round pick, which after compensentary picks, comes out to basically a 5th round pick. If we trade with Miami, the lowest pick we should be getting in the deal is a 3rd rounder.

The titans may have been hung up on a 3rd on pacman and decided to take the the 4th. We don't know what was happening behind those doors.

In that case I think the player we had been targeting with the pick had just been chosen (? OT to the Pats).

Jake Long In the Fold; Miami Still Wheeling & Dealing?
By Rob Rang
Senior Analyst
NFLDraftScout.com

April 22, 2008 - NFLDraftScout.com has learned from multiple league sources that the Dolphins are working the phone lines in an effort to get back into the first round. The purported target: Michigan quarterback Chad Henne.

Henne would be reunited with Jake Long, the former Wolverines offensive tackle who agreed to terms on a contract Tuesday and will be the No. 1 overall pick by Miami on Saturday. Moving back into the first round would be similar to the plan orchestrated just last year by the Cleveland Browns, who chose Wisconsin offensive tackle Joe Thomas with the third overall pick and moved back into the first round to nab Notre Dame passer Brady Quinn.

The Browns traded their second-round pick of the 2007 draft (36 overall) and their 2008 first-round pick to the Cowboys for the right to move back into the first round for Quinn. The Dolphins -- owners of two second-picks this year (32nd, 57th overall) -- may not be forced to trade any of next year's selections to nab Henne. According to trade charts used by NFL teams, the combination of the two picks could put Miami back inside the top 20.

With the NFL shortening the amount of time allotted for each first-round pick to only 10 minutes, if the Dolphins -- or any other team -- are interested in trading, they'll need to lay the foundation for the deal now. The new timetable has led to unprecedented pre-draft trade rumblings.

I don't get why they'd move up to get Henne. They can stay exactly where they are and get him.

My guess is that they would be afraid of another team leap frogging them and taking him before they pick. Maybe Henne is rated higher by most teams than we think? I think they'd be insane to draft Henne at 22 personally, but think about it Henne has a strong arm and throws a good deep ball. He isn't very mobile and he holds the ball too long...Has Bill Parcell's found his next Drew Bledsoe?

Really, Henne is a guy who's described as a leader and an intelligent player and while Brohm is seen as intelligent there have been some mentions about his leadership. The Flacco probably has a couple years longer for his learning curve to flatten out. Henne really may fit Parcell's plan in Miami and they may just want to make sure they can definitely pick him up.
