Does Newman deserve Nate Clements money?

I love the guy...glad he is a Cowboy...but does he expect Clemment money? And is he worth it? Actually, is Nate Clemments even worth Clemments money....but Newman is always a hair short or almost their or almost caught that. I mean that is the story of his career. Against the Eagles he dropped one that he would have taken to the house. Against the Giants one went through his hands that he would have taken to the house. I AM NOT BEING CRITICAL of him...what I am saying is that he has never made the Pro Bowl because he misses on the limited opportunities he gets to make the big play. And with that as the backdrop, can we really make him the highest paid Cowboy in franchise history

It's the same deal as Davis. It's not that they deserve that much it's what will have to be paid to sign them.

We must re-sign him because good corners are so rare and valuable and his value to our defense is obvious.

But as Troy mentioned the other day his failure at times to make the big play by picking the ball when he has the opportunity is what has kept him from being a Pro Bowl player. He needs to spend some time working on the jugs machine after practice and learn to catch the football. If he improved in that one area he would be considered an elite player, imo.

I doubt he'll be the highest paid player in Cowboys history. We gave over $30 million guaranteed to Romo; Clements, by comparison, only received $22 million guaranteed. I also don't see him getting an 8 year contract - he's 29 right now; Clements was two years younger when he signed his deal.

I'm no contract/salary cap guru, but I'll guess he get something in the neighborhood of 5 years/$50 million or 6 years/$60 million. $20-25 million guaranteed.

Edit: Though, with how the salary cap has escalated this could be totally blown out of the water.

I hear you..but I wish he would just make more plays.....the only time it came back to haunt us was Thanksgiving Day agaisnt the Broncos a couple of years ago..where had he caught the ball he would have taken it to the house, we would have won the game...he would have made the Pro Bowl..and we would have made the playoffs (that was the year we missed the playoffs by 1 game)

That seems a little high for a player thats never been to the Pro Bowl or without at least five ints in a season. Newman is a very good corner and we all know he is better than most Pro-Bowl selections. BUT, the numbers are what drives the escalator contracts. I see a contract of about 7 years/$63 million with $25 million guaranteed. I think Jerry waited to see how this season will play out and make sure he is making the right committment.

Good point that Newman is 29 years old. Now maybe he is a Darrlye Green type that can play effectively past the age of 35 but I dont see the cowboys breaking the bank for Newman. The stats say you dont have to and I really doubt if Newman would want to play anywhere else.

I agree with this wholeheartedly.

Newman repeatedly get the position and the ball goes right through his hands pretty much, everytime. Agree that he would've had a couple of TD's this year alone already. Plus, here is the real killer, and this goes back to last year and the year before - every single time that he drops a potential pick we end up giving up a TD. Every time.

This last game would have continued that fact except that Jacobs' TD got called back for a hold.

Somebody PLEASE get him out on the juggs machine...

Newman is worth top dollar.

Guys like him dont grow on trees so what ever it takes to keep him then get it done.

They rely on him to single cover his guy. Newman and Ware are the most valuable guys on defense. They will keep Newman no matter what the cost will be.

Our secondary will be in shambles if we let TNew leave town. How much money will he get? Who knows... With the injuries he has suffered through this year, maybe his price tag will be a little bit cheaper.

we have some tough decisions to make...it was like in our 90s run when we started winning and other teams started pilfering our coaches and players...we have not even won anything yet and we see guys lining up to get paid. Heck Newman AND Barber have switched agents. We cannot pay EVERYBODY top dollar and win...it eventually catches up to you. Which is why people should not get their shorts in a knot when people criticize the 1st and 2nd round busts draft picks during the Parcells era....a couple of hits and you don't have your hands tied with Ken Hamlin and Flozell Adams. I mean can we really let Hamlin walk at this point?...I have been 100% behind letting Adams walk, but his play suggests he deserved to be extended. Do you keep Crayton? You have to take care of Barber....you have to take care of Newman....you have to take care of Ware. I think their are guys who just flat out won't see contract #2 from the Cowboys. Carpenter/Burnett....one will go one will stay. Spears/Canty....one will go one will stay. This is what I mean by tough decisions. Jones/Barber....one will go one will stay. This upcoming draft IS VERY CRITICAL. We have got to find a CB, WR, RB and interior DL on day 1....to avoid having so many guys we are forced to pay!

He's better than Clements, but I'm not sure he'll get Clements money. I think the market overreacted and we're going to see prices come down just a little bit. Maybe not, but I think we will. At a minimum, we're going to get a "hometown discount."

I agree with that take.

And I think the "hometown discount" will come into play if we extend his contract well before his current deal is set to expire at the end of '08.

Newman is better than Clements but he'll be 3 years older to when his contract expires.

Clements hasn't exactly been tearing it up compared to Newman. Since 2003, Newman has 13 INTS and Clements has 16 INTS. Teams throw at Newman quite a bit less than Clements.

This year, Clements has 2 INTs, 1 more than Newman but with 2 more games played. Now, would Newman get Clements money? Who knows, the market will have changed. Making Clements the highest paid ever hasn't exactly had a high return on investment.

Agree with theo, and was typing something similar when I got called away for some actual work.

I think TN will handle it a lot like Romo did with his deal. He wants to be here and has lots of connections in Dallas now, from charities to endorsement deals. I think he knows that if he just plays well, a big deal will be coming his way, and Jerry will be fair with him. I'm not worried about him chasing every last dollar and wanting to leave.

And as to what bbailey said in his last week, yes, we are going to have some hard decisions to make, much like the Pats and Eagles have had to make. That's why Flo, as good as he is, is probably gone. Smarter to extend the younger rather than the older guys. At some point you just have to accept that the younger, cheaper guys can do the job.

Looks like the Bills knew what they were doing letting Nate walk rather than over paying.

Even in Buffalo Clements was a good corner but he wasn't in Champ Bailey's class or even Newman's for that matter. He's a good tackler and will come up with a big pick once in a while but he's not any close to being a shut-down type corner.
