In looking at the current offensive line, it got me thinking:
Can this team possibly keep 11 offensive linemen?
Given current injury issues, developmental prospects, and uncertainties for 2011, I'm wondering if this team could and should keep 11 offensive linemen.
Colombo and Kosier are currently injured and both have a checkered history in that department as well. We'll need to keep players to replace both, at least for the short term.
Factor in a player like Barron, experienced enough to be a quality swing tackle, but due for free agency next season.
It would be a risk to cut him for an inexperienced player like Young or Brewster but he could be gone next year.
It would be tough to cut either Young or Brewster and risk losing them before they get to the practice squad. And either one will likely be needed to replace Colombo in the near future, or at least provide depth.
Bright has had a mediocre camp thus far, but he's really the only young guard the team currently has, do you risk losing him by trying to get him to the practice squad?
Costa is playing well and I think he'd get snatched up as well. And at this point, he's the only backup center candidate. The only healthy one anyway.
Holland has shown to be a capable player so I can't see him going anywhere either.
By my count, that makes 11:
Free
Kosier
Gurode
Davis
Colombo
Barron
Holland
Costa
Bright
Brewster
Young
If it's my choice, I reluctantly say goodbye to Sam Hurd and go with 5 receivers while stashing Johnson and Hudgins (seems the Cowboys are hiding him anyway) on the practice squad for 2011.
What say you?
