Does the pocket need to be that clean for the offense to succeed?

We score 41+ if those PIs get called. 41+ points is a lot, regardless of who the QB is, especially against a team with a secondary like the Lions'.

Missed calls happen every game and yet teams still manage to overcome them. Assuming two of them didn't happen on the same drive it cost us 12 points at the most. There was a blatant hold by Smith that wasn't called on one of those drives that could have negated touchdown and cost us the game, and/or subtracted 4 or 7 from that 12. It happens both ways.

I agree.

The worst thing is mediocrity and lose out on Herbert and him go to the Giants or something.

Either be really good or really bad. No 7-9 or 9-7 please. (unless 9-7 gets us to the playoffs)
In today’s nfl with the cost of free agents it’s really bad being middle of the road
Get in the playoffs or lose double digits is the best thing for the team now and in the future
