This question has bounced around for years. Does the WR make the plays that make the QB special or does the WR need a great QB to fully display his true game. Look what happened in Minnesota when Bret Farve hooked up with Sidney Rice this year.

in a team sport i worry more about how they work together than who's better.

would irvin have had the same career in tampa?
would aikman in KC?
mr smith in oakland?

i think people focus too much on the individual and not how the individuals come together and compliment the whole.

It unfolds differently for every WR/QB combo but most of the time its the QB.

It Not A Clear Cut Answer For This. Randy, chris And Jake Made Donte Look Like Pro Bowler. Then You Have The #2 Wr That Leaves For That Big Pay Check And They Aren't As Good As They Were Ex Tj.

bit of both and a bit of neither.
give a great receiver a poor quarterback and he will make great plays but likely struggle to get consistancy and not make the impact he could with a better qb.
likewise a good qb will get limited plays out of a poor receiving corps but is likely to come up with some

What's it going to be then, eh?

The great QBs are simply great. Look at Manning. He lost Marvin Harrison and just keeps on going with rookies. Romo lost Owens, but he's having his best year since his first year starting.

But a bad QB can make even a good WR look poor. If I was forced to say one makes the other, I would say an elite QB makes the talent around them better. A WR can only get open, if the QB is unable to get them the football because they are inaccurate, it does not matter.

I agree with this for the most part though I'd like to point out, with Manning, he does have Reggie Wayne. So it's not like he went from Marvin all those years to having a whole bunch of rookies who've never really played and those guys only. He still happens to have one of the best WRs in the NFL.

But Manning is still great, either way.

The QB makes the WR more often than not, although a good target can make a quarterback better.

Who was Sidney Rice before Brett Favre came to Minnesota?

Peyton Manning is leading an undefeated team with Pierre Garcon and Austin Collie as 2 of his main targets.

Tom Brady did it with JAGs before Randy Moss and then revived Moss' career when the Pats acquired him.

On the other side of the equation, you can look at Daunte Culpepper with Randy Moss and without him. Although to be fair you have to factor in his injury issues.

I agree with that.

I would say that in some cases a great WR can make an average QB look better as in the case of Jake Delhomme but overall it is the QBs who deliver the ball. Just ask Terrell Owens if the QBs in Buffalo are anywhere near as good as Tony Romo.

I like how most of the responses have absolutely nothing to do with what the OP is asking.

Neither.

It's a team effort. The QB or WR probably aren't going to be talked about much if you dont have an Oline giving them time.

I think as Cowboys fans we can all relate to that.

The Vikings have an awesome running attack and balance it well with the pass. There is a reason Favre isn't throwing that many INTs. As far as the OL, please.... They had Tavaris Jackson and QB and they were average...

I think it's mutual. We've seen plays where Romo was on target but the WRs didn't make the catch. We've also seen plays where the WR got to his spot and was open and Romo's pass was way off (too high, too low, behind, etc). The QB is the general out there; the offense revolves around him most of the time. Often as the QB goes, so goes the offense.

It's why the QB gets more of the glory when it works and more of the blame when it doesn't.

IMO, I think it's the QB that makes the WR. Look at Randy Moss. In Oakland, crap QB, crap offense...people were talking like Moss's career was done. He goes to a system w/ a solid QB and does great.

You're taking my quote WAY out of context.

I am in NO way inferring that you don't need good QB play to win games. Everyone knows that you do.

I'm saying if you dont have a good line, it probably wont matter much. And if anything you're helping make my point. They had one of the worst starting QB's in the league and because of their line and rushing attack, made the playoffs.

...It didnt hurt that their defense was top 5.

very well said, it is not an individual thing otherwise all WRs would be stars under Aikman, and Trent Edwards would be with Buffalo.
