Does The Talent Match The Need?

As we all know this team needs defensive players, and this year's draft class seems to lack top-end talent on the defensive side of the ball.
A few weeks ago we were looking at reaching for players in the top 5 to say hey we filled a need, but now we are sitting in a spot where those are seeming to be the right pick for those guys like Parsons, Surtain, and Farley. The question is are those guys head and shoulders better than guys who are projected to be late 1st-2nd round prospects like Bolton, Campbell, and Kendricks? IMO not really, and if a team is willing to move up to get their guy we should be all ears and very receptive to moving back.
This is a weird year, and the evaluation of players moving into the draft is going to be strange so having more picks in a year like this would be more important than any year before.
I hope we find a way to move back add some picks and rebuild this defense in numbers.
If we can have our 1st and 4-5 2nd day picks it would go a long ways towards building this team.

With that being said this all lands on getting Dak re-signed.

This is definitely the draft to move down if you can. But you gotta have a willing partner. Best chance is for a team looking for a QB that might still be on the board.

When we were in the top 5 I was all about trading back to the 10ish range and adding a pick bc I thought that would put us right in the sweet spot.

If we're now going to be drafting in the 10-12ish range and your guy is there (Farley / Parsons / Surtain / OT) you take him. Even if we're picking later in the teens I'm hoping a top 10ish stud falls like Lamb did last year...even if it's offense.

I'm all about trading down if possible but it's such a limited top of the class I'm going to try my best to secure a top 10ish talent in the first if I can.

If those guys are available great, but if not trade back and get some more picks.

I don't know if there's a huge drop off from the guys who will be available outside of the top 10 unless there's someone who slides like a Pitts who is a blue-chip player at a position that isn't a high-value position.
With that you hope someone wants to move up for a QB that gives you a bit of leverage in a trade.

I'd be fine with Horn, Kendricks, or Campbell over Farley or Surtain if we can add a day 2 pick or two.
I'd be fine with JOK, or Bolton over Parsons if we can add a day 2 pick or two.

This is going to be a deepish draft with a lot of hit and misses. I'd rather have more opportunities in a hit or miss draft such as this years. Yes I know every year is hit or miss, but this one is going to have even more question marks than ever before.

This might be an issue, and I do question if the value is going to be there if you do. One of those where you need to evaluate the value of the trade vs what is on the board.

If Farley or Parsons are on the board when we pick I'm not trading back. Those guys have all pro potential IMO.

JOK is a tweener and is undersized too play LBr in the NFL and Bolton isn't a top 20 talent IMO. Kendricks has potential but he's raw and will take some time to develop.

Even if Farley or Parsons aren't available, I could see a stud OL fall (Darrisaw/Slater) that we could grab.

I am saying if we move back into the mid 20's and grab some picks.

I agree, this draft class does not appear to be as good as last year's although there are some WRs that look like studs. But the Cowboys have defensive needs all over the field so taking the best defensive player available in the first, or trade down a little if it nets decent picks. But to me the strategy has to be DT or CB in the first round, CB is the more likely position to net a quality player. In round 2, I think safety is going to get the best value. But if they don't get a CB in R1, then they will probably take one in round 2 which I think will blow their chances of getting a quality safety. I usually like BPA, but this year I think it has to be CB, S, LB with the intention of signing a stud DT in Free agency.

I’d just need to know who I’m passing on to consider it.

I feel pretty confident if we pick around 10 we’re going to have an opportunity to land a really good player.

IMO does it really matter unless its Sewell?
I mean we need help along the o-line, d-line, lb, and secondary the more picks we can get to address those needs the better.
Assuming Dak is back we could use quite a few pieces and taking 1 guy unless he is almost a lock to be a impact player for a long time like Sewell this team could use more picks in the first 2 days.

Of course it does. You're assuming we do nothing in FA to help fill our holes.

Now that we know we're picking at 10/11 we know there will be a 1st round talent available.

How did FA work for us last year, how much cap are we going to have to work with this year?
1st Rd talent
Farley, Surtain, Horn... who?

You arent likely to get value at the DL in the top 15 of this. However I think there could DL at the top of the 2nd. So we could be in a position to where we take that best player in the 1st and are still able to add a key player on the DL in the 2nd.

Keep in mind we have alot of picks in this draft. Pretty decent ones too, extra 3rd and 4th. Moving in to the mid 20's, I might prefer a 2022 1st to a 2021 2nd

You can't shut down being active in FA just because you have a bad year...if McCoy is health who knows how he would've helped. Ideally you can patch glaring holes with vets and attack the draft with a bit more of a BPA approach.

Whoever falls...it could be Farley, Parsons, Slater.

The 1st round edge rushers are interesting this year. Guys like Rousseau and Paye are upside picks. They have 1st round traits to be really good, but you have to bet on the traits. I'm a little more cautious for that kind of pick but if the team loves a guy I could get on board. Rousseau needs some polish on his pass rush tool box but I think he has a pretty high floor as I think he gives you + run D day 1.

I don't think there's a first round DT in this class. I'm a fan of guys like Wilson, McNeil and Barmore but nowhere near pick 10.

I am not saying to shut down FA, what I am saying is we need to take a big jump in drafting young talent on cheap contracts.
O-line has been banged up that needs to more than duct tape especially if we are going to invest somewhere in the 40 million per year market for Dak
D-line needs work
LB's corp needs to be blown up and addressed
We might not have a secondary next year with all the FA.

All this, and we don't even know if there will be a big drop in the salary cap, although I doubt there will be, but if there is we are working on limited space.

Stack the picks, move them around, and go get a bunch of guys who can develop for now and the future.

This team doesn't have a ton of depth as we saw this year, and they are just getting older.

I get it, and agree to an extent, but if I have an opportunity to add a 1st round talent to that group and get someone I feel good about at 10 I'm doing it and not trading down.

I think there is alot of depth in this DE class. I think there are alot of Yetur Gross Matos caliber guys in this draft.

Im gonna be very interested to see what kind of shape Rousseau shows up in at combine. I think if he blows it away without playing since last, it says alot about his football character. He has production, but a very raw tool kit. You want to know you have coachability. Showing up to the combine in top shape is evidence of being committed to his craft
