Doesnt Romos contract mathematically rule out drafting a QB at 4 this year? I'm no cap wizard so maybe I'm wrong. But my understanding is that We can't trade Romo based on cap ramifications and he needs to play out a minimum of 2 more years if we don't want to be looking at $20mil of dead money

so we want to trade up with Cleveland and lose more options to fill holes in our roster (which is what we've been told we intend to do rather than in free agency). And we want to draft a rookie that will sit a minimum of half of his rookie contract (which isn't cheap btw) on the bench.
With hopes that he pans out and becomes our franchise QB assuming Romo is done prior to his contract ending which is in 2019.

We want to ignore drafting a player that can contribute immediately and we want to forfeit picks that could also provide immediate results. So we can get one of the QBs The Rams decide they DONT want.

I don't understand how so many are calling for a trade up to go QB at this point. Seems insane to me.

I don't think they're taking one at 4 anyway.

Wouldn't totally rule out one in the mid-late 1st though, depending on who is still there.

What does what is owed on a contract have to do with how many years he can physically play?

Technically it's "no" but logically it seems to be yes

The answer really is no.

There's a rookie wage scale - they are paying the amount for the slot that a player is picked at, whether it's a QB, DE or kicker.

The cost for that first contract is irrelevant.

Technically and logically....No...the answer is No.

No whether they want a QB vs a Different player is a different story.

As of right now we are really only committed to Romo this coming season and the next year. If we cut him before 2018 we would only be looking at $5.7M in dead cap compared to his $25M cap hit. So as long as we don't do something incredibly stupid like restructure Romo we could be looking at 3 years (including the option) of cheap rookie deal for a 1st round QB. Makes even more sense to take 1 when you really think about it like that, but very possible the Rams screwed that up

I would say yes but it really is a matter of opinion. I can't think of any team in history that drafted a QB that high with the goal of "grooming" him. That would be a huge amount of the cap going towards QB over the next few years as well.

It isn't a factor at all. That guy is going to get his 7m avg per yr contract simply because of where he was drafted. Yes, it is a lot of money at the QB spot, but whether it is as QB or DE or CB it really isn't going to change anything this year. Say Romo has a bad year this year or gets injured, then the likelihood he gets cut in 2017, we take the cap hit either in one year and get 5.1m in cap space split it in two and get 14m in cap space. Romo is really on a year to year basis the rest of his contract.
