Pre crack Whitney
No one knows just how often I have contemplated killing her drug dealer a.k.a. Bobby Brown. It's a damn shame what he did to her.

Whitney.
Thats the only version I know.
That's why I posted both renditions. :). I have always enjoyed Whitney's more, but Dolly's has never taken a back seat to hers in my book.

i like both versions but knowing Dolly wrote it regarding a business split from Porter Waggoner gives her version of it more of a meaning to me.

This. The question as to who is better is not nearly as powerful as the question, How good is this song?

Whitney sold over 12 million copies of that cover. Whitney Houston has one of the best voices I've ever heard but Dolly Parton does this song better because she lives it. You can't duplicate that kind of thing IMO.

I'm glad I don't have to choose.

I love them both, but ABQ is right about this.

On another note _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

That song is so sad.
I have been with my wife since she was 16 and I was 17. (I'll be 57 next week)
I have never loved, and lost.
I have never had a broken heart.
It must be the saddest thing in the whole world to love someone and not be able to be with them.
It is emotional for me to hear this song and think of people not being with the one they love.
I cannot imagine.

Wow. Its not even close.

1. I will always love you

Whitney COMPLETELY nailes it. "AND..... I-IIIII--IIIII"

Dolly just sings it. Nothing really happening, no emotion, nothing.

No contest.

Its one of those rare times where the copy blows the original away.

Other songs that were completely owned by Covers:

2. Cum on Feel the Noize - Quiet Riot over Slade
3. I love Rock and Roll - Joan Jett over Alan Merrill and Jake Hooker of Arrows

Jett's version is still one of my favorites from high school. I can still remember a little brand new cable network called MTV playing the heck out of it way back when. :p:

Gotta role with Whitney, she was the best once upon a time.

The way Dolly sings it is classic Dolly, but few people can match Whitney when it comes to sheer vocal range, inflection and power. When she was on, she could have made a Justin Bieber song seem Gospel.

This was my first favorite song. I listen to plenty of music prior to hearing this song, but none struck me the way this song did.

Name dropper.

Your just jealous.

First time I heard this, Dolly told me this...

She said, "Do you know why my feet are so tiny?"

I said "No".

She said, "Because nothing grows in the shade."

I didn't know whether to laugh or not.

She has a great sense of humor and she doesn't take herself too seriously.

She is one of the nicest ladies I have ever met as well.

She is kind of eccentric as well.

Dolly, but I am biased since I know her. :D

omg, my music campers would love you for knowing her. Half of them love Dolly so much. We've been trying to get her to come visit.

I like how she says it takes a lot of money to look this cheap. :lmao:
