He is one of the names you'll be hearing, regarding the Dolphins' coaching position -- once it opens, as now expected.
Sparano, 44, is the Cowboys' assistant head coach and offensive line coach.
Last season, he took over the playcalling from Sean Payton, and the Cowboys adjusted well to the insertion of Tony Romo at quarterback. This season, Jason Garrett does the playcalling. Still, Sparano remains extremely involved in the offensive plan. Jerry Jones thought enough of him to interview him for the head coaching position (the one Wade Phillips got) and to prevent him from joining Payton in New Orleans as the offensive coordinator this season, though publicly it appeared that Jones actually demoted him.
Dallas observers say that Sparano is well-regarded by players, because he is a straight shooter. He is not all that extroverted when it comes to the media, but his work is respected by them as well.
Sparano was not on the Dolphins' long list of candidates last season.
But what we're finding, very quickly, is that nothing the Dolphins did before will have any bearing on what they do now.
All that matters is Parcells' past, not theirs.
