He has already been paid the cash years ago for their dead cap (signing bonus and then a restructure) so he wouldn't have to pay any of that money back. Unless you're referring to him basically being mentally retired last season but stringing them along through rehab so he could get base rate for one more season (2022 season)Waited to get cut so he can keep the money.
Really the only advantage to being cut vs retired is the Dolphins no longer hold the rights to him anymore, so he has more flexibility if he did want to return to football
