Don’t read too much into OTAs either way

OTA’s are just to get work for all the players… especially all the young players who are being worked into the team. To show free agents what they’re going to be doing and rookies how they’ll be used.

The coaches can see who’s been studying and who hasn’t been. They begin to see what they’re going to have with this year’s team.

In short, it’s a head start on getting ready for the season.

Along the way the media cried about wanting to report on the practices, so the league agreed to one day a week. The media reports what they see, and if a young guy makes a good play (or a bad play), then the football starved reporters write about every detail, and the football starved public laps it up like a puppy drinking mother’s milk. There is absolutely nothing else going on in the NFL Universe, so each play is de-constructed and inspected like evidence of a crime.

After all of that, a good or bad play is talked about by the fans for weeks until training camp starts. It’s human nature. The teams, coaches, nor players have anything to do with the hyper-analysis of meaningless plays, but it does happen for every team in the league.

Having said that, a great play by a rookie is better to see than a bad play by him. And I’ve found that, in general, if you have a rookie that continues to make good plays throughout OTA’s and Mini-camps… then they typically make those plays in training camp… and if they do it through camp, then, given the chance, they tend to make plays in games that count.

Word that Wright is consistently getting to the ball and taking it away, is good news, no matter how you look at it. Particularly since that happens to be something that guys typically either innately have or will never have at all. Parsons getting to the QB and taking the ball away is also good news and points to better things in the future. Word that his instincts seem plus is particularly encouraging. It is encouraging for both because these things show up regardless of pads or no-pads, for the most part.

So, while it proves nothing that they’re making plays… it is decidedly better than them looking lost and fans saying it means nothing until the pads come on. It certainly isn’t something to hold against the guys making plays.

I’d rather see the INT’s than making excuses why they got burned.

Every year we hear about players being anointed the next GOAT for them to not even make the team. LOL
Weve even seen this with players who have dominated Pre Season.

OTA's remind me of a first day on a new job.

On the very first day they pare you up with a "trainer" to escort you around and show you where everything is located i.e. supply cabinet, breakroom, cubicle, bathroom, etc. Then they go through "orientation" where you spend five hours looking at the videos, i.e. safety, sexual harassments policy, chemical data sheets, etc.

After orientation you have about two hours of observing or performing some easy entry level task. If you have prior experience or if you learned a certain process in college you might perform this task in a very efficient way. At that particular point you are Nahshon Wright making that INT.

The company is pleased that you seem to be able to pick things up but nobody is emptying their desk out to make room for you. Don't expect that promotion when you show up day #2. You may be heading in the right direction but you got a long way to go before you become an elite performer. You haven't even served your first client.

It'll, hopefully, be encouraging to see some validation for how well our defense has progressed as training camp commences.

The newfound leadership for this team has gone to great lengths to ensure a much improved defensive setup for our 2021 season!

Suffice it to say, the overall strength of the offensive line has also enjoyed several encouraging changes to also augment the offense.

This is our yearly reminder to not overrate or get caught up in what you hear these days about matchups being played out in OTAs while players are decked up in shorts and t-shirts as opposed to pads.

These events can reveal some things about individual players like speed and quickness, but it is never done in a real game context with pads and other factors that make football a team sport.

I’m not saying off season workouts and OTA matchups means nothing. But I am saying it doesn’t mean enough to get too high or too low on a player.

We all can remember the proclamations of greatness spouted by too many Cowboys fans about the “amazing” Rico Gathers from a few years ago. A “star” of OTAs and even a few big preseason game plays, yet currently no longer playing NFL football. Of course most of his “greatness” occurred while wearing a t-shirt or while being matched up in a ps game against a UFA safety from a directional school with no chance of ever making an NFL roster.

Let’s not read too much either way into OTAs.
And preseason games as they feature guys that will never play during the regular season.

~There's always the mind control defense~

We may want to train our defenders to cause opposing ball carriers to fumble or go down by giving 'em a dirty look!
(It'd be a sure cure to ensure the health of our players and prevent possible injuries -- just a fleeting thought.) :muttley:

You do know there will still be more Negative Nancie's than Happy Harry's on here?:muttley:
And some that are in between what they will be depending on the season. Let's call them Neutral Nellie's. :lmao:

I agree you don't make a lot out of OTA, I think what McCarthy has talked about especially on defense is they are able to install different phases of the defensive system with a new DC so that when they hit training camp you have these guys up to speed on what they are trying to accomplish on defense and better understanding of what coaches are expecting from them. Right now much of these workouts of focused on fundamentals

throwing around speculation and opinions is what its all about.
On my grave stone it will say ,man was not prudent he had opinions in OTA's.
