Donald*

I am not a huge fan of these kinds of threads every time a team cuts a player or doesn't resign someone.

BUT this is a very interesting potential prospect, if they don't resign him. Yes he is 37, but he has still contributed a great deal (in a limited role, 4th receiver for the Packers?) He still has the speed/quickness/hands..

Instant upgrade over Ogletree. Driver would be more of a 4th receiver... assuming Coale is ready to contribute/play the slot. This would give time for some of Harris/Holmes/Radway bunch to polish their skills, and possibly step in for some playing time if an injury occurs to one of our starters. I just do not feel confident with just having Bryant/Austin and no one proven behind them.

I'm sure many will disagree saying he is too old and we need to develop these young guys etc etc. But if he doesn't make the Packers, who are unbelievably stacked at receiver, he might be the best possible WR on the market regardless of age.

Here is a little breakdown of Ogletree's first 3 years vs Drivers last season

Ogletree - 2009-2011 - 25 receptions, 294 yards, 11.8 ypc, 0 TDS.....
Driver 2011 - 37 receptions, 445 yards, 12.0 yards per catch, and 6 TDS!

Could be a possibility since Jimmy Robinson was his WR coach in GB

I think you go into camp with what you have, then if you're not satisfied you look for veterans that are cut/FA around the league. Kinda of like what happened with Robinson last year. There's no rush to find a 3rd WR without even seeing what you have in house.

Dolan nooooo

I think he could help teach Dez a TON about being a consummate professional WR in the NFL.

Why no? Just curious

I think Garrett needs to keep building the team from within plus we already have enough competition for #3-4 WR.

Would hate to see Driver leave Green Bay but last year he was being covered by linebackers. Packers are loaded at WR and have guys waiting to take his place that will be better. it is the nature of the business. Donald was great but it is time to pass the tourch.

It's not a bad idea, but it does represent short-term thinking. I think one of Garrett's main principles is to balance the short-term needs with a long-term vision. Obviously, Driver doesn't fit that. However, he may make them better right now. He does have the history with Robinson, and I'm sure Garrett likes him. (Plus, the guy can really dance)

But I would see what we have with the young guys with whom they can build long-term first. I would hate to see us let go of a guy like Holmes, or Radway, who could foreseeably turn into another Miles, and could be good for you for several years, in favor of a guy who's only gonna be around for a year or two at most.

Yeah, it could be similar to the Brian Waters situation, where we could regret passing on the guy. But unless they feel he's that much better than anyone we already have, or he's the difference between being highly successful and being mediocre, I'd pass.

can we bring in every NFL player to satisfy all the fans who think our team sucks so bad we need every teams garbage to make our garbage look worse.

I agree with this. The team grabbed the current group of players and need to see them out on the dance floor, evaluate and make a decision. They're going to try and groom what they have and if it does not fit the bill or generate the production they think will come from the position with those players then they'll go looking in the "2nd free agency" in Aug/Sept.

For me, I'm really hoping this Coale kid turns into Welker or Jordy Nelson. That would be fantastic. But hope is not a strategy. Work'em, see what you got, then make a decision.

I'm sick of hearing every 3rd reciever brought in is gonna be the next Wes Welker. If he's good its cause he's good.

Wes Welker will be the next Wes Welker. :lmao2:

Every white WR for the next decade will be compared to Wes Welker...

I mow his neighbors yard, he lives in flower mound, Texas...so it'd be a convenient drive to The Cowboys Stadium!

You're right, if he's good it's because he's good. Throwing around comparisons can be easy to do unfortunately. Hope Coale is a stud.

You mad? When did I say our team sucks? And how exactly is Donald Driver garbage?

I don't know how much Donald Driver can bring to the team as a WR anymore. He did put up pretty good numbers last year as the Packers #4'ish WR.

Beyond the numbers, however, even if he is the #5 WR in Dallas I could see him contributing signifcantly as a mentor to the other WRs. The Cowboys have a very young WR corp at this point with Miles Austin being the senior statesman.

Let me put it this way, if you could somehow transfer Donald Driver's knowledge on route running, general knowledge of the passing game, how to train in the off-season, and all the little tricks of the trade onto Dez it might be worth it.
