Don't expect changes on how to upgrade RB market value

I feel bad for the players but $10-12M per year ( what now appears to be their ceiling ) is still a lot of money.

What happened to the running back market? “Blame the analytics community”

Running backs are confused. They’re angry. And for good reason.

Pro football has targeted the running back position as a vehicle for saving cap dollars that can be devoted to other positions. While it has become a major point of contention in recent weeks for the league’s current veteran running backs, it has been happening for years.

At one level, it’s a basic matter of supply and demand. Every major college produces every single year a tailback capable of performing in the NFL, if: (1) the line can open holes; (2) the player can keep possession of the ball when hit by NFL-caliber defenders; and (3) the player can be trusted to pick up blitzers in pass protection.

There are more good ones than the game needs. So, as a matter of basic NFL business, why not flip from an older and more expensive player to a younger and cheaper one?
Welcome to the new NFL for running backs. It's not changing anytime soon.

So a dad or mom to his / her son.

Son, don't play RB. You will not be able to support us in our retirement.

Future of football .... what in the heck was a RB .... kind of like the dinosaurs ?

:lmao:

I don't know what the current running backs are surprised about. This goes all the way back to Le'Veon Bell. The run game is not valuable, and the difference in effectiveness between a top-5 back and an average back is minimal so there's no point in paying big money.

We're not that far away from the distinction between RB and WR basically disappearing.

Since this is on the "fan zone" board: my only concern about the RB market is will Pollard be 100% after his injury and can he handle a bigger load and still be the same dynamic game-breaker he has been. If both of those are answered in the affirmative I'm all for giving him a nice deal after the season. Not too long of a deal because he will be 27 going into next season, but if he plays this year like he has recently I won't be too worried about paying him

There's a lot of good RBs no real great ones. Nobody is going to compare Ezekiel Elliott,Todd Gurley,Leonard Fournette or Saquon Barkley to Adrian Peterson or Ladanian Tomlinson etc.

There use to be preeminent RBs and some ok decent guys now the landscape changed with a lot of good/pretty good and a few better than that but no real marquee RBs you use to carry the team.

Yeah Henry is close but he won't be that and is caught in the tail end of his career with the rest of them as being valued less.

It's a shame. I love the superstar RB and the ground and pound offense.
Football was best when the RBs ruled the NFL.
This is why I wanted Bijan Robinson so bad.

It has actually been this way for a long time. Since Terrell Davis. It's just that same concept, almost 30 years later has been confirmed by analytics. We've just been sleeping on the idea paying Zeke etc.

The first round picks will do well. It's the picks in later rounds that will never see a big payday. You have to be a Derrick Henry talent to get a 2nd contract. I thought Barkley had enough leverage since the Giants will suck without him, but apparently not.

I was just watching a game between the Cowboys and Oilers from 1985. When was Dorsett drafted, 1977? Tony still had lightning speed and how many years was he playing at that point? What is it with RBs today?

I don't want to hear they get hit harder. They don't. Watch some of those older games, they get hit more often back then. Gang tackled more often. On unpleasant surfaces as well. They took more of a beating back then than they do now.

THE SOLUTION: Running backs need to NOT allow teams to RUN THEM IN THE DIRT, that means, every few plays TAKE YOURSELF OUT OF THE GAME. If your team is playing strategic due to weather or whatever reason, DON'T allow yourself to play long amounts on drives, risking injury! If your team is up by 30, TELL THEM YOU'RE NOT GOING BACK IN!!! They want to low ball everything, play in a LOW MANNER!!!

What's going to happen, a RB goes for 1200 yards, only to be offered 3 million dollars a season? Yeah right!! Totally unfair what they're doing!!!

..how many out of work RB's or undrafted collegiate RB/s would run the rock for 10 Mill?

........ I bet the line would go round the building.

The RBs are good but teams don’t want to invest a lot of money long term for a player that has a short shelf life. Plus, most teams are using multiple backs. RB is one of the easiest positions to find a good player. Once an RB completes their rookie deal their best years are already behind them.

I'm just waiting for some team to shock the NFL and return to a two back system with a RB and a FB, both capable of carrying the ball and getting yards.

It would be a Czonka-Kick, Alstott-Dunn type combination running against the smaller. but quicker pass rush specialist DE's, the five DB defensive backfield with the lighter pass defending LB's.......

Their time of possession would average about two thirds of the game.....

The rest of the NFL would be totally unprepared for it. That team would have a two TE system with the TE's looking like mini-OT's. Even the QB would be a Lamar Jackson or Jalen Hurts type. They would throw less than 20 passes a game and half the passes would be to one of the backs......

The HC would be some retired NFL RB that never got paid.....

That would be awesome.

Just do what Zeke did.

If you’re a stud RB hold out on year 2 or 3 of your rookie deal.

You’ll get paid then.

Nobody wants to pay big bucks for a 27 year old
Back. 23 or 24 sure.

There is another problem.

The majority of NFL offensive linemen are terrible.

Look at the complaints our Oline gets and it’s been a perennial elite unit.
