I agree w/ ratpower. This is about "production." Guys coming off knee injuries go through a couple of things: Lack of leg (not just knee) strength, loss of football timing, and confidence. Spears has great upside and great potential, but I guarantee you, as a rookie, Spears will need to be at 95-100% to be effective. Otherwise, he'll be a body plugging the hole, but not getting much production. (and we'll have to listen to Tuna around week 7 diagnosing the first part of the year and saying "Spears never really got going early on, I know he had a tough time missing the early training camp. That set him back." My answer to Tuna will be why don't you let the guy heal first and then push him (kind of like how they are holding Rivera's hand w/ his hamstring issue) It is not like the trainer just clears him and then Spears is back to normal. Trust me, I've played competitive athletics at the collegiate level and had reconstructive knee surgery (ACL). Once I was "cleared" to come back, it still took a while before I had my strength and confidence. I've talked to my doctor friends and they said his grade 2 MCL sprain, means he needs more like 4-6 weeks to be fully healed. Better to have a great Spears weeks 3-16 than an average Spears weeks 1-16 because he came back too soon.
