Don't Rush Spears back...

First off, I know most NFL players play with pain. Still, I read that BP is hoping Spears will be practicing next week. Spears had three injuries (knee, high ankle and groin) that can keep him down all year long at less then 100% if BP rushes him back. Given the physical nature of D-Line, Spears will need all his strength to be effective. We need him at full strength and BP should lay off his rookie "tough guy" stuff. Spears at 80% all year is not good enough, let him heal so he brings his "A" game...

That's my take, chime in...

He he falls any farther behind, he may not make much impact at 100% this year.

I completely disagree. Parcells knows what he's doing. He knows how to get a player mentally tough enough to handle the NFL. YOu really have any complaints with how it resulted with Julius Jones?

If he's physically able to play, he should play. He's making a lot of money, he should the mental toughness to play hurt.

Parcells won't rush him back if there's a chance to worsen the injury.

Parcells is no dummy. He knows mroe than you, and he's coached long enough where I think he would know the extent of injuries

I understand ratpower's comments and, I too, share his concern. However, I do side with Inman, Rack and Billy a little bit more.

What's funny is that, living here on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, one of my fellow co-workers is a HUGE LSU fan. So I told him that I am hoping that the three LSU players on Dallas develope into solid NFL players for the Cowboys.

He told me, "James and Peterman have a shot to become that. Spears? Don't worry about him. He's a monster."

I wish he would work that magic with Rogers.

Morning Pops - yes - I'm probably being a little harsh on Rogers. I guess I'm disappointed. Like I said in another thread, I never really liked this pick from the beginning so it sorta stings a little.

We've got some serious probs at RT.

I'm disappointed as well Sarge..........I think Mr. Rogers probably just signed his own walking papers.

At this point we either bring someone in or hope Petiti can grow into the position real quick.

I'm very dubious of there being a FA savior out there waiting to be called by BP.

I think Rob has the tools, the mental tougness, and desire to do the job.......we need him to be a fast learner.

Yes Sarge I agree the RT position is a very serious issue along with a couple other suspect positions.

At this point all we can do is get him as prepared as possible for '06. I would let him know his *** is on the line and it is time to put up or shut up, perform or get a call from the Turk.

After the pre-season game with AZ, I said that Rogers had an APB out for some intestinal fortitude.

Apparently, intestinal fortitude did not find him.

Sorry, I do have problems with how he handled Julius last year. JJ was injured during pre-season and BP kept sticking him back out there to try and keep him in the Curtis Martin toughness standard (see raider preseason game last year). By that point, JJ was so bent out of shape to fall into BP's tough guy standard, he was playing on messed up ribs against the browns not admitting it to anyone and probably extended his injury weeks. Peterman last year messed up one leg in the preseason game, BP put him back out there and then he messed up the other knee with serious damage blocking for an extra point.

I'm not saying guys can't tough it out but BP should make sure Spears is ready to go before sticking him back out there on one leg...

For the record, I back the Tuna but I also will call him out when he's being stupid. I just want to make sure he doesn't screw this up.

I understand you, ratpower... We were so fortunate that Spears wasn't lost for the year, you'd hate to do something stupid and re-injure him just for the sake of not missing a few practices.

But I get the idea that we have some really top-notch trainers, and I don't think they'd put a guy at risk if he weren't ready. Heck, I was afraid they were rushing Julius last year, and then he ran 30+ times and looked great in his first game back, even though IIRC he played a week ahead of schedule. So if anyone can rehab Spears ahead of schedule, it's probably our trainers. :)

i think with the progress of coleman and canty we can afford to bring spears along a little slower. we all know he'll end up being the starter eventually but maybe we can be a little more patient with him because of the depth.

I agree w/ ratpower. This is about "production." Guys coming off knee injuries go through a couple of things: Lack of leg (not just knee) strength, loss of football timing, and confidence. Spears has great upside and great potential, but I guarantee you, as a rookie, Spears will need to be at 95-100% to be effective. Otherwise, he'll be a body plugging the hole, but not getting much production. (and we'll have to listen to Tuna around week 7 diagnosing the first part of the year and saying "Spears never really got going early on, I know he had a tough time missing the early training camp. That set him back." My answer to Tuna will be why don't you let the guy heal first and then push him (kind of like how they are holding Rivera's hand w/ his hamstring issue) It is not like the trainer just clears him and then Spears is back to normal. Trust me, I've played competitive athletics at the collegiate level and had reconstructive knee surgery (ACL). Once I was "cleared" to come back, it still took a while before I had my strength and confidence. I've talked to my doctor friends and they said his grade 2 MCL sprain, means he needs more like 4-6 weeks to be fully healed. Better to have a great Spears weeks 3-16 than an average Spears weeks 1-16 because he came back too soon.

I'm pretty sure having been an NFL head coach for 25 years, Parcells is fairly familiar with the MCL sprain time table.

At this point he's going to be behind Coleman and Ratliff, and there's even talk of giving Canty some reps on the left side where he'll be more effective batting down passes. So its not like he's going to play 70 snaps a game even when he comes back. Spears said the high ankle sprain bothers him more than the knee.
