Don't you realize? This is how toughness is built.

Interesting topic on Sirius NFL Radio this morning rang true with me.

They were talking about the 49'ers success thus far and calling them the surprise team of 2009.

They then mentioned that people had been waiting for this since Singletary took over.

They brought up how NFL team's become the image of their head coach.

Singletary was a passionate player who prepared as hard and as diligently as anyone. And his team looks to have taken on that image, playing sound fundamental football.

And San Francisco is one Hail Mary away from being undefeated despite not having a wide receiver to speak of, Gore missing time, and a QB who has thrown for about 700 yards in 4 games.

And all this in the short period of time that Singletary has been head coach.

And then I look at the Cowboys and they look to also be a reflection of their head coach.

Laid back, undisciplined, unprepared, lacking in fundamentals, with a 'we'll get 'em next time' attitude.

SF could end the season 3-13 and the Cowboys could end up 14-2. I don't think either will happen, but it could. A four game sample is not enough. Let's just wait and see. Many Cowboys fans are quick to annoint any team but Dallas, while nitpicking every flaw the Cowboys have.

I see promise on defense -- they held Denver to 10 points (7 given up by offense) and they held the Giants to mostly FGs (even with 4 turnovers by the offense) -- and they have played well for the most part.

The special teams have been a very pleasant surprise. Field position is much better this season.

The offense is struggling. No doubt about that. But anyone who doesn't see promise with our powerful running game and our playmaking QB (when he's not shackled), just doesn't want to see it.

Oh, so THAT'S what we're doing! Building toughness.

Sweet.
SP, didn't you once say you live in Pittsburgh? It must be tough living around all those towel wavers while the Cowboys are struggling. But it's still early and I refuse to give up hope.

We need to get our confidence back.

Romo has no timing with the receivers. Maybe its all the option routes and/or not having many short checkdowns?

What's it going to be then, eh?

Adversity brings about teamwork better than nearly anything.

We had plenty of adversity last year and we didn't come together as a team.

The problem is just as much with the staff as the players. When you have offense and defense coached separate and distinct with no unifying force, this is what happens.

This is why I agree completely with Rod Woodson here:

When I look at the Cowboys, I see two issues: Who are the playmakers, and who are the leaders?

The one playmaker they did have (Terrell Owens) is now in Buffalo. So who are the playmakers? At receiver, there are none. I don't care what anyone says, and people can argue for Roy Williams. But it isn't going to be true, for the fact he hasn't done it in the past and won't do it in the future.

And who is the leader in Dallas? If you show me a team that doesn't have leaders, you're showing me a team that can't win. Who do you go to? Who can keep people under control? Who has that calming, or even the rah-rah voice, on the sideline? There are none in Dallas. Until they find a leader, a person they can turn to, they'll never win.

No leadership. All we have right now are a collection of players who think saying the right things, acting like they should means winning. There still is nothing holding everyone together, nor anyone who holds each one of them accountable, either from a player or coach front.

But it doesn't matter because our owner/GM thinks it is overrated anyways.

The other problem with this theory is that Wade Phillips is in his last year and has not been offered a contract extension.

You would think the players would rally around their Head Coach and try to save his job.

As someone else pointed out, this team has nothing but adversity, starting when they lost to the Giants in the Playoffs and have yet to make anything of it.

No. I live in Pennsylvania, but it is pretty much a three way split between Steelers, Commanders, and Eagles here.

And yeah, it sucks balls.

It is not just if you win or lose but also how you do either because understanding and adjusting to that process enables you to advance against stiffer competition in December and the playoffs.

Good post. This sums up the difference between us and the 9ers perfectly.
