Most of us are excited about the potential of our young defense. Some think we could see the return of a unit that could carry us far into the playoffs, MAYBE even dominate. My question is this: With the “subjective” rule changes, how many game deciding defensive stops could be nullified by flags? Now that the D seems to be getting some teeth, is the dentist (NFL) gonna use his pliers?

you wont see that defense again, only in shells of people thinking they are seeing it. As if people in the same uniform are going to duplicate that. Not happening. And the league is no help as it degrades. Older people are going to have to realize, watching sports isnt the thing anymore. Scores and highlights can be had easily. The younger people dont need to wait for the games or sit around like we used to do. So the league will pay the price if it keeps assuming people will do liek they did in the 80s and 90s

Well sure, NOTHING lasts forever, but to the folks who want to enjoy football like the “old days” as long as they still can, MORE POWER TO YA! Just like rock-n-roll, it’s what I like. I don’t CARE if it’s trendy or “right”! John Belushi, George Carlin, Rodney Dangerfield—they can’t be duplicated either—doesn’t mean someone else can’t entertain the crap out of us.

Watching sports “isn’t the thing anymore”?!? What the hell does that even mean, and why the HELL should I give two craps what lame millenials think?

anyone can sing, can they sing the song that burns your heart? can the y replicate that of which you remember? no, can never go home agian. The players with change, the times will change. its just a uniform after a while.

Great D's have strong fronts. Sorry, ES, we'll be looking at a possible Doomsday II when they complete the D w/ S's and DT's.

I agree that you have to be strong in the middle, but I still think this defense will be significantly better this year. Sorry K, but that’s what I think! We’ll have one of the league’s best groups of starting LBers, a promising group of aggressive and fast youngsters in the secondary, and 2 or 3 above average pass rushers. Besides, with an inside group that includes Collins, Ward, Price, Woods, Ash, etc., I think we’ll be fine. As Parcells always used to say—can’t have steak on every plate!

I absolutely agree!!!! LVE is a freak, reminiscent of Lee/Kuechly. My only fear w/ him is keeping him healthy in the middle, and a smallish DT combo makes that much more difficult. If we'd only get a stud in the middle, we could indeed have a super bowl type D. Stubbornness, that's the only excuse.

And if Gregory can play, look the freak out!!!! People have no idea how good this cat can be if he's really straightened up!!!

So if you have no hope, and it gives you no joy, why are you here? NO ONE expects Staubach to walk out on the field! You can’t replace Lilly or Emmitt Smith or TD or Playmaker, and we all KNOW that change is inevitable, so what kind of stupid point are you trying to make? Every player/game/situation is unique, and “great” comes and goes.

Since the other teams are having to play under the same rules I can't see it being much of an issue other than with fans. This defense as a whole has performed because the offense kept them off the field with the running game. Don't see where anything has changed significantly enough that this is now a dominant defense that over powers or physicals anyone else. It's going to have to stay fresh and continue to flow to the ball. Everything else is the typical fan overhyping, routinely seen from this fan base every year!

There’s SOME truth to what you’re saying, but EVERY fan base is hopeful this time of year. Secondly, there’s a significant difference in defensive personnel in a number of ways. Finally, have you forgotten the differences that officiating can make? Remember our opponents going flagless for 8+ games last year? Think it had an impact? Can’t you see a scenario unfolding— it’s late 4th quarter, and we’re nursing a lead in a game with playoff implications. We hold them on 3rd and long, but Bang, a subjective, highly questionable flag enables them to score!

I expect this to be a bigger issue early on and then fade as players get better at implimemting these rules at game speed. We might just benefit from it too.

I agree, I don't foresee true dominance from this defense. I do think there's a chance our defensive backfield under the tutelage of Kris Richard could show some worthwhile improvement and that would definitely help our pass defense, but until they change Marinelli's mindset on how to build a DL, I don't believe the term "doomsday" is in Marinelli's vocabulary.
That doesn't mean we couldn't field a pretty good defense, just not dominant IMO, thanks to Marinelli and the HC who enables him.

Never been much for the conspiracy theory. If you watch the games subjectively ref miss calls all the time including ones that help Dallas. Work at a state facility with fans for multiple teams and every fan base can point out missed calls and even bring the play up on their phone in many cases. It doesn't prove there is some conspiracy to cheat some team. It just proves 5 old men can't reasonably be expected to keep up with what 22 souped up athletes are doing at full speed in 5 second intervals!

I hope our defense starts hittIng hard enough to where we may get some of these flags. The non-physical defense we’ve had for years wouldn’t have drawn many flags.

Short and sweet. And true! Till you build a DL, you haven't built a defense, and our FO and coaches have long ignored our need for DTs.
No DL, no Doomsday.
