Because I just don't and I think it's dumb. It's a jersey number, not a trophy, ROH/HOFer..... Plus I think as a young player it would be a cool idea to have the same number as a legend.
Not to mention there are many players who've earned exclusivity.

That can be said about a lot of numbers, 8, 12, 22, 33, 88, 94, 74, 73, 54, maybe 82, and 9, 28
 
I thought 74 looked good on him and the millennial/gen z cowboys fans don’t even know who Bob Lilly is

Just my opinion, I respect how it is and it doesn't get me upset. I'm just one that doesn't subscribe to that particular tradition. It's a silly number. The real accolades mean more.
There are a couple traditions such as uniform colors that I don't agree with, but it hardly affects my day.

I'll be sure to let you know when they rob Roger of his 12, lol.

I don't think anyone thinks it is as important as the real accolades - nobody is putting it on the same level as the HOF or even the ROH. It's just a simple expression of respect. Lilly was the Cowboys very first draft pick, was and still is known as "Mr. Cowboy", and is in the conversation for best D-Linemen in history. As long as there are enough numbers to go around without giving out 74, then what does a small expression of respect matter?

No, I get it. I know what Lilly was/is, I get it man. I just don't subscribe to certain traditions is all. Totally my humble opinion.
Let me put it another way. Let's pretend you are Lilly, would you want to NOT let other guys use it?
I really wouldn't.

Honestly, I doubt Lilly would be bothered by it if somebody else wore 74, but I assume he at least appreciates the gesture.
