So many chicken little threads .. I figured I would drop in a dose of Reality
Dallas Cowboys - While I am not upset over the Cowboys not rushing out and overpaying for average players that other teams have done so far (Bentley excluded), I am very disappointed that they have been very slow to replace the releases of Dan Cambell and La'Roi Glover and the rumored release of Larry Allen. And no, Kosier is not an equal replacement for Allen.
Keyshawn Johnson - If we release him, it would be the biggest mistake of the off-season IMO. Keyshawn has been the go-to guy more than any other player when Bledsoe needed tough yards or the game was on the line.
Dan Campbell - If his replacement this year is already on the roster with a last name of Pierce, we are screwed. While there are one or two tightends available that may be on par or better than Campbell, looking for his replacement from within would be a huge mistake.
Larry Allen - I was not too impressed with his play last year. As he has gotten bigger in his upper body, he seems to have lost his mobility which was half his game during his first few years. If he gets squared on a defender, they won't get by him, but if the defender gets a little angle, Allen couldn't stop him. When Allen pulled he missed his block a lot more often than he actually made blocks. Allen is nowhere close to being worth the money he is due this year either. All of that being said, if they are planning to replace him with Kosier, the offensive line just took a step backwards.
Al Johnson - This guy would not be a starter on any other NFL team in the league. I recently watched several games from last year and this guy missed block after block. What is even worse is that even when he was able to block the right defender, he couldn't hold the block very long. And yes, I know .. he's put on more weight .. but weight can't improve your skills and he just doesn't have them. To me, Al Johnson is the second coming of Matt Leir.
Marco Rivera - Due to his injury last season before playing any games, I'll give him a break. That being said, if he plays this year like he did last year, signing him will go down as one of the worst blunders Jerry Jones has ever made. It is not encouraging that the best running game we had last year was on the road against a very good playoff bound team with Andre Gurode starting in place of Rivera.
Terrell Owens - I have mixed emotions on signing T.O. I don't mind signing him but not at the expense of releasing Keyshawn. If having T.O. means releasing Keyshawn, I'll stick with Keyshawn because Keyshawn will do what it takes to win and he blocks better than most receivers and tight-ends in the game.
Summary
This team is not nearly as bad as everyone wants to think. I talked with Hostile in great deal about this. In many positions we not only have a solid starter, we have quality depth as well. Our primary weaknesses at this very moment are Free Safety, Kicker, Center and Right Offensive Tackle. I'm not down on Pettiti like many of you are because he played very well until Flozell went down. When you have two young tackles and a center who can't block anyone, the defense is going to get a lot more aggressive and they did. That being said, we need a veteran to backup Pettiti and challenge him for the starting position.
I would like to say that with all the cap room we have and all the pre-FA promises and boasting the Jones did about being "very" active in Free Agency, I haven't been too impressed. Our biggest needs are Kicker and Free Safety and neither of those positions (not starters at least) need to come from the draft or players already on the team.
One last thing I would like to comment on. Every year the Commanders have over shadowed the Cowboys in free agency signings, we have beat them and ended the season with a better record. Last year, before the season even started I publicly stated that I was concerned that with all our big free agency signings (aka: busts at this point), the Commanders would be the better team and it turns out, they were. So, perhaps this is an omen for this season .. less equals better
Oh, one last note ... Scott Shanle sucks!!!
