Doug Farr: Why DTs are more important than ever before

Two of the DTs that played for the Cowboys in the 90s were from Jimmy Johnson's championship Miami Hurricanes team.

Jimmy recruited them out of high school, coached them in college, and drafted them for the Cowboys.

Russel Maryland and Jimmie Jones were both ex-Hurricanes.

Willie Broughton as well.

Jimmy liked his DT’s. Jimmie Jones and Russell Maryland were freshman on that 1987 team, backing up Jerome Brown. That team beat up Penn State in the title game (check the offensive stats) but lost, in great part due to Vinnie Testerverde tossing five int’s. Miami had seven turnovers total that game.

Made huge plays in the playoffs as other teams focused on Haley and Casillas.

Did you know that an aging Jim Jeffcoat had 10.5 sacks for our 92 season super bowl?

Jeffcoat was revitalized in the 90s as a part of our defensive line rotation. Those Jimmy teams had the best depth on the defensive line I have ever seen, and practically impossible to duplicate in today's NFL.

He was terrible that game. It should have been a blowout win for Miami. If Testaverde even plays a mediocre game it would have been an easy win for Miami. Big Red Flag that held true for his NFL career.
