What's the word? He's almost but not quite as big as Colombo, doubt he's as strong. Does he just need another year or two to develop or is he just a career backup player? And who shaved half his head?:laugh2:

I wish we had more information on his progress.

I'm guessing his head issue is a result of rookie hazing.

(or he should get his money back from his barber)

well all i know is that nate newton said he liked him, that doug free had something to him, in playing the offensive line;

and yes, i think it was a big huge mistake when wade phillips refused to play doug free, or like when he was forced to play felix jones on kickoffs or choice at rb, you saw the results

because he could have played him in the rams game that blew out the cowboys or when the giants killed the cowboys up in new york or the last game of season when eagles killed the cowboys;

He's the magical mystery guest on the offensive line.

I love listening to Nate Newton talk about the offensive line, but he can sure turn on guys quick.

Nate was all for giving Pat McQuistan the shot to take Kyle Kosier's spot during pre-season when he was sidelined. The Kitchen turned on McQ following his lone appearance at guard in the pre-season.

Well we did have Holland who was proven but went down and didn't McQ do better than Procter?

Yeah, but Nate was very high on Big Red getting a shot at guard and then forgot about him after he admitted being uncomfortable moving back inside.

Nate really thinks a lot of suspect tackles can slide inside to guard and really take their games up a notch. The Kitchen did it himself with the Cowboys.

I guess he was just disappointed after hyping McQ.

McQ seemed to have promise but it disapeared. When you think how bad the hotel was hurting with his arm and all, the fact taht the boys did not play either one of them says a lot right there.

That line of thought has been tossed around a good bit.

But our coaching staff isn't overly eager to play unknowns and we were fighting to make the playoffs until the season's final game.

I hope it was more about the coaches feeling Flo gave us the best chance to win. That doesn't make them right, but I really hope Doug Free has some type of future with the team.

I've never thought Pat McQuistan had the footwork to be a starting tackle and have long wanted to see him get the chance to challenge Kyle Kosier inside. The staff toyed with the idea in '06 and '07 but never followed through.

Kosier was thought to be a short term absence at the start of the season, so the coaches opted to go with Corey Procter after landing Montrae Holland as insurance.

When Kosier was lost for the season, the staff still thought Proc and Holly would be enough.

They were wrong.

I don't know what McQ could have done, but I'd like to have found out.

I'm wondering if besides WR and QB, offensive linemen have the biggest bust potential. Or to be kind, it's harder to make the team at OL than anything.

Free is/was said to be an amazing athlete for his size or prolly any size. Like everybody I hope he makes it.

OLs are unique that they can't improve their status by playing special teams, playing FB or anything.

All I can figure is that OL must be the most political position on any team. Coaches determine "well he can play" or "well he can't play" without about any reps in a regular season game. Nobody can see what they can do or can't do in the crunch.

The guy we were going to draft in round 4 last year with the pick that we traded to the Browns for that 69th pick this year ... well it was OT Anthony Collins, went to the Bengals last year and started late in the season because of injuries. He really did well, despite his own injuries, and will probably start for them this year. How often has this happened on the Boys? About never, as far as starters the last 15 years of Jerry's reign. Hooray, Tom Ciskowski, and maybe Hudson Houck, who had pretty large draft votes on OLs last year for the first time in ages.

He did so well, impressing coaches. It's like if you are an OL, you are a stand-in for the star on Broadway and you only go in on the rare moment when the star of the show has a freaking heart attack, and you have to go in after 500 performances of the show. You are the star tonight.

Not many OLs get to prove themselves in the "moment" to prove themselves ..

I just find it hard to believe that when the Hotel could not lift his arm and his hand was infected so that he could not punch like normal the coaching staff did not at least TRY one of our youngsters in one of the games that we were either comfortably ahead or out of it.

McQuistan played in the Philly game in place of Proctor and played pretty well. Kosier's hugely underrated on this board, and he's not getting replaced this year, but it would be good to see Free/McQ develop into legitimate players. I think you need 8 starting-quality linemen for a playoff team, and a good mix of guys who can play multiple positions. We'd have 7 if you could count on either Free or McQ.

I've had that complaint about the Cowboys for years.

My guess is that the hotel refused to sit down. If he was totally miserable he wouldn't have had a choice but he wasn't...

If they trade up for William Beatty you'll have your answer.

Nothing against Kyle Kosier, but Corey Procter proving he's only suitable to be an in game injury alternative and not a full-time starter hasn't changed my wanting to upgrade left guard.

Kosier is smart and agile, I'd rather have him at center than guard but he isn't going to take Andre Gurode's job.

I'd love it if someone else claims left guard and allows Kosier to be a valuable game day reserve on the interior.
