I was looking at the above link. After this year his guaranteed money is all paid thanks to his restructure bonus. But if we cut him it will be a 8.35 million cap hit due to the prorated signing bonus. Now we could make it a June 1st cut and split it In half over two years.
But if we keep him he will be a 11.175 million cap hit.
Could he better at RG, might be worth a shot.

thanks for posting. i have been wondering the same thing the last few days. personally, i'm done with free but that is a hefty hit to the cap if we cut him.

Well it will be a 2 million savings if we cut him, but then your paying 8.35 to let him walk and then your going to have to pay another RT. I think he is gone and Dallas will use a june 1st vet cut

Thanks for info , we have to keep him this year, but he wont be back next year.

If his level of play does not improve I don't see him here next season. I would imagine he would be a June 1st cut in order to spread out the cap hit. As for moving him to guard, I don't see it happening. He is just not strong enough nor physically suited to play guard. Besides, the most direct path to the QB is right up the middle and the last thing you want to see is Doug Free at guard getting pushed straight back into your QB. As it stands now I think you are going to have to utilize both the draft and free agency to shore up the offensive line in 2013.

He sucks, but the smart thing to do is wait till June to chug his worthless butt.

personally I think we should jettision your worthless butt now and not wait until June.

Seems like it is the kiss of death once we give a guy a new contract. For the record, I agreed w/ paying the guy at the time. Just not as a LT.

this

thanx for the info

in hindsight it looks bad but most of us were on board with signing him at the time

wish our talent evaluators had a higher hitting % though

Looking at his cap figures the next two seasons compared to his recent play makes my balls hurt from a phantom kick.

They can cut free for 8.5 m, and then they get the 10m cap fine back, so it's a net 1.5m to cut Free. Get it done Jerry!:D

well the problem was, at the time he was evaluated, he was playing better. He seems to be getting outmuscled more now than I can ever recall, but it might be related to some technique or something.

I want Free gone just as much as the next guy, but I can't get over the thought that it just won't happen this offseason cause of the money involved.

If we really want Free gone, we almost have to have a bad season. A 9-7 season and above, I just see Free staying, which isn't a good thing if he doesn't improve but it would probably happen unfortunately.

Either his $7M base salary gets cut or he gets cut next year. I'm guessing he is benched in mid-season, cut in the off-season and hopefully signs with Philly:)

People are punitive and dumb. That's a poor combination.

I think he is playing poorly and has lost lateral quickness but some random scrub off the street is not going to play better. Give Parnell some snaps sure but even if Parnell is capable you need a backup and Free provides that if nothing else.

I guess this could be an option. Right now he'd probably look better than he does now. I don't think that there's any question that the Cowboys are regretting signing him to that contract. He unfortunately has not played up to it at all and hindsight is obviously 20/20.

It's only game 4 coming up and there is a long way to go...

The team plays lazy on the OL...stupid is as stupid does!

But, as sloppy as they are playing right now, they do have an early bye week...so hopefully some changes are made, and IMO, they will.

I just want the team to jell in the cold Winter months.

I agree. It's very possible to get turned around.
