Dove Hunting

Anyone into dove hunting? Season starts in just a few days. I'm pretty excited about it myself. I signed up for something called the "walk-in" program which basically means you pay a few extra bucks and the state of texas (I think most states have these though) gives you a map of every local landowner in the state who signed up to let people use their land for hunting.

Everyone wins, (well except maybe the doves) the landowners make a few extra bucks, and the hunters get new land to hunt on.

Anyone else gearing up for the season? Nothing like a morning hunt on sunday morning, then coming home around 11:30 to gear up for the games.

I used to be and we'd bring them home and cook them on a rotisserie over mesquite with a little honey and BBQ sauce glaze.

I haven't been dove hunting in years.

Me either. But I took a trip to colorado a couple months ago to visit some family and my brother in law was into shooting skeet, then he took me to his "hunting" area.

Thats what brought back my urge to go dove hunting again. I had been years ago and had a blast, but then got away from it for a few years. I'm looking forward to doing it again.

I used to go dove hunting quite a bit.

I can do a mean dove whistle.

Used to do a lot of dove hunting,from early whitewing season in deep south texas,to mourning doves around various 'tanks' from Dilley,to Cotulla,to Zapata...To grain fields that surrounded my old place of employment outside of Rosenberg. Five o'clock would roll around,and into the restroom to change to jeans,camo,boots,etc. Some days I wouldn't see anything,just being satisfied with being out there. Other days,limiting out within an hour. Nothing like the smell of gunpowder,or the sharp 'snick' of popping out spent shells from your over/under. Living in the mountains of Georgia,one of the things I truly miss about Texas,is the dove hunting. Others would be wade fishing off the North Jettys or San Luis Pass,great seafood,and to kill for mexican food.

On a side note, one of the finest wildlife artists the country has known,passed away about a month ago. john Cowan was well known to upland bird hunters,and hunters in general,for his lifelike depictions of south texas hunting at it's best. RIP John.
