My exact words were, "I can easily see him matching or beating Carriers' ten interceptions in his first year in the league." And the thread subject is just drafted Caleb Downs, who is expected to start day one at safety.

You are absolutely correct about the number of interceptions. That is not unique. It is not applicable to what I was saying. Here are the players who tied or exceeded the interception mark--along with when they tied or exceeded the interception mark during their career:

Interceptions did factor into Carrier winning DRoY as a rookie at safety. Not one single rookie has won the award as a safety since he did it. My assumption is Downs has a high probability of duplicating the feat. He is just that good. That was the basis of my earlier comment in a nutshell. I understood other players (for example Trevon Diggs) intercepted ten or more interceptions in a season since Carrier did.

Correct on the easily beat vs match or beat.

I’m not sure what the rest of you post has to do with anything. 10 or more interceptions in a season is extremely rare. That was my point. And I intentionally didn’t exclude corners so that the numbers were higher.

It’s even rarer for safeties. And you seem to think it’s highly probable he does it? When it’s not even highly probable anyone gets ten or more interceptions in a season.

Hell, Reed never did it. And he’s an all time elite in ball skills. Downs isn’t that.

Yes. He could, in fact, end his rookie season with zero interceptions, but I believe he is capable of matching Carrier's rookie mark. If true, I do believe it will greatly aid his opportunity to win defensive rookie of the year.

He hits like a truck and runs like a deer. He knows how to get every player lined up on defense. He calls out routes at the line of scrimmage already. He's from a high-quality family. He's an all-star safety, linebacker, slot corner, and occasional pass rusher all rolled into one.

He's Cooper DeJean times ten. I hated when we didn't draft DeJean. Now I'm glad we didn't.

Not many guys like this come along. With good fortune health-wise, this is a perennial All-Pro (not just pro bowl) who will find his way to the Hall of Fame. Paired with Jalen Thompson, who's also a smart player, this could be the best deep safeties we've had since Washington and Woodson.

Yes, he's that good. Best player in the draft by a mile. And he's ours.

The Cowboys just made the best draft pick, lucky or not, that they've made since Emmitt Smith.

Man im not a CFB guy...so yallz analysis and breakdown of downs is getting me excited!
 
He is so much more than a safety. He can play slot and play close to the LOS and cover deep

Best of all, the kid is a leader and can QB the D.

So much to love about this pick. We have some dawgs at every level of the D now.
