Started watching some more of the DTs in this class and WOAH. Best class I can remember in a decade or so. 6 of Brugler top 50 players are DTs.

Now signing a DT in FA is still my top priority since these dudes take a little while to develop but I’m 100% in on doubling down.

I’d probably wait until the 2nd due to the depth but so many great options. Graham, Grant, Walker, Williams, Nolen and Harmon.

If you haven’t seen Harmon yet do yourself a favor and check him out. STUD.

It won't matter how many great pass rushers, cover corners we have if the defense is constantly in 3rd and short scenarios, matter of fact they struggle to even get teams to 3rd down.

This defense has been terrible against the run and everyone is to blame, DT's get pushed down the field, DE's cannot set the edge, MLB's cannot get off blocks and our safeties take poor angles.

Fix the interior and then it becomes much easier to defend the run, it's the DT''s, LB's that need the biggest upgrade.

Corleone

Scouting Report: Strengths

  • Super athletic - Made Bruce Feldman's Freak's List at #16. He Wrote: "His power is something special. He benches 485, squats 605 and deadlifts 700. He also can really move, clocking 18 MPH on the GPS and running a 4.68 pro shuttle. The only defensive tackle over 300 pounds at the combine with a faster shuttle this year was Wisconsin’s 309-pound Keeanu Benton, who ran a 4.65. "
  • Exceptional power at the point of attack, consistently driving blockers back and collapsing the pocket with a bull rush
  • Displays excellent leverage and pad level, allowing him to anchor against double teams and control gaps in the run game
  • Quick first step for his size, enabling him to penetrate and disrupt plays in the backfield
  • Strong hands and violent punch to shed blocks and disengage from offensive linemen
  • High motor player who pursues plays sideline to sideline and shows good stamina for a big man
  • Versatile defender capable of playing multiple techniques along the defensive line
  • Impressive production as a run defender, consistently making plays at or behind the line of scrimmage
  • Shows potential as an interior pass rusher with his combination of power and quickness

Scouting Report: Weaknesses

  • Relatively limited starting experience with only two full seasons as a starter at the collegiate level
  • Can occasionally play with high pad level, negating his natural leverage advantage against interior offensive linemen
  • Pass rush repertoire needs expansion beyond the bull rush to become a more consistent threat on passing downs
  • Sometimes struggles to disengage quickly when initially stalemated at the line of scrimmage
  • May need to improve conditioning to handle a full NFL workload and maintain effectiveness throughout games

Yup. I think Mazi has shown a little progression this year which is good we just need him to take that next step next year and pair him up with a solid vet via FA.

Add in another top 50 DT in the draft and the DT play could look vastly different next year.

I’m a big fan of pumping resources into the DL as a whole. If you’ve got a high end DL it’ll mask a lot of issues in the rest of the defense.

This is why Graham is next on my list after Hunter. He can play any DL position and is good at both rushing and stopping the run. Heard Broaddus say he doesn't think he is as good as both Carter or Q. Williams, but he isn't far off.

I don't see Mazi ever being more than what he is now; basically a place holder until you find someone better

He’s showed minor progression each year…I don’t think he’ll reach his 1st round draft selection but if he can turn into a league average DT next year that’d be big for us.

Graham is ranked higher but he’s definitely not just a run plugger. Per PfF:

• 86.3 PFF pass-rushing grade (2nd for iDL)
• 31 QB pressures (1st)
• 17.9% pass-rush win rate (2nd)
If that's the case, if they miss out on Graham, not much fall off to the next guy.

I think Mazi will be a Malcolm Brown type guy by the end of his rookie deal

which was someone we could have gotten in later rounds which is my main gripe but if he can reach that level he might even be worth a second not too expensive contract but I doubt it
