The Cowboys hopefully grabbed great players in the draft, but they put themselves in great shape in one other important category, the salary cap.

DE and CB are two positions that generally get paid a lot in free agency, if they are any good. Whether happenstance or plan, the team saved a ton of future cap room by going DE, corner, corner, assuming they can play at a high level.

Moreover if they leave via free agency they should have an above average contract number which helps on comp picks on down the road 4 to 5 years from now.

Yah.... they are getting away from spending in FA and are more committed than ever to drafting well and reigning their guys. Next year's draft will be nice as well since we should get some decent comp picks.

The FO is definitely becoming efficient in building their team. Not only for the present, but for long-term success as well.

I still think, though, that they'll have to hand out a couple FA contracts to legit pass rushers if they want to legitimately compete for a championship. Time will tell!

The 5th year option for Taco won't be cheap but #28 last year signed a 4/9.3m contract with 7.8m guaranteed....pretty cheap

#60 signed a 4/4m deal with 1.5m guaranteed....better than a used Carr for 4/24m

DAL is now 19m under the cap with Romo's money and it will take around 1.8m of space to sign the entire draft class

The defense is young and with talent now...if Dallas so chooses, it can still target now, a defensive talent and pay what is necessary via the draft. That is a realistic possibility now, as well. They have a good load of extra picks for next draft.

The scary thing is this team manages to get better with their draft process by the year, and next year they're slated to have multiple mid round picks in rounds 3-5.... with most of their key positions covered, and not many needs forecasted for the 2018 offseason, they should be able to head into that draft with a true BPA philosophy to fine tune the offense and defense, and potentially set them up to put a strangle hold on the rest of the league

Let's see the fruits of the draft after we see them play a little.
If the FO has found the magic to hit on so many picks per year, then we can do no wrong.
Somehow, I find that hard to believe given the history of the draft.

C'mon, common sense has carried man kind for centuries...

I'll put off those dreams until this season has been played out. The Cowboys are already at 'growth central' and this fan already is excited at the prospects to just watch...

the Cowboys can literally target any player that they so desire - next season.

I'd like to see them perform as well! I'm cautiously optimistic. Go cowboys!

Common sense says no one has the magic formula to drafting.

Lots of great teams have been built by having their management consistently out draft their competition. It's not a stretch to think we might be in that situation. We're definitely one of the better drafting teams in the league under Garrett. At least, most attempts to measure such things that I've seen recently have the Cowboys in the top 5-6 teams league-wide.

it is probably statistically significant that we brought in a probowler every year for a number of years.
however, to expect success approaching the success of 2016 does not make sense.
if we look at the number of good players from 2014 and 2015, 2016 is a major outlier.

With parity the way it is in the NFL, common sense says you don't have to be a great drafter to make a run; you just have to avoid being a bad one.

whats the cap situation with Tyrone Crawford? if he were to get cut.

Perhaps the FO is finally deciding to stop clinging to aging and declining players longer than spending cap practicality demands. I hope so.

His 7.25m salary is guaranteed this year........ he can't be cut

They could cut him next year and save 1.8m but would take a 7.3m dead money hit

I just hate his contract. I don't know why he would warrant that type of money to begin with.

Draft is just as much about acquiring cheap labor as it is about restocking talent in general. Getting three rookie contracts at CB for the next four years is a huge cap benefit. CB is one of the higher paid positions in the league.

Preach it. It's true.
