On paper the Cowboys have far fewer glaring holes than most of the teams picking this early. With that said, Dallas could go in a few different directions at this point. Based on pure need, defensive end would probably get the nod since Marcus Spears, Jason Hatcher and Stephen Bowen are all due to become free agents. Wisconsin’s J.J. Watt actually began his college career as a tight end at Central Michigan but after joining the Badgers he developed into a super productive, 6-6, 292 pound defensive lineman. Watt isn’t an elite pass rusher but he is absolutely relentless with a non-stop motor and is versatile enough to play multiple positions in either a 4-3 or 3-4. Watt’s best fit at the next level will come as a five-technique in a “30” front and that's exactly what he’d play in “Big D”. Cal’s Cameron Jordan would also be an ideal fit. Considering the issues they had in pass coverage last year the Cowboys would be crazy to not strongly consider Nebraska CB Prince Amukamara too. Dallas could also use an infusion of youth along the offensive line so Tyron Smith of USC could be a possibility, although Jerry Jones doesn't historically like to use first rounders on blockers

Given this scenario I take Tyron and dont look back. Or at least trade down a bit and get one of Jordan/Watt if thats really want they want. But the fact that they drafted Spears R1 and hes been about what they expected and value him so lowly makes me think its not worth a top 10 pick.

lol i would throw up. More at the fact that Fairley went 8. And then throw up again that Watt went 9

I'll even take Tyron Smith over Watt and I think Smith is a bust in the making.

Even though we don't need a WR, I'd take Green and Jones before Watt. I'll take Ingram too if I have to at # 9 before Watt.

I'll take Robert Quinn in a heartbeat over Watt.

Unless it's Dareus, Fairley or Bowers I don't see us going d-line at # 9 unless we trade down.

That whole mock draft is garbage. Not just at our pick.

I'd take Cam Jordan before I take Watt. Watt reminds of Marcus Spears while Jordan is a Shaun Ellis clone.

You guys are seriously underrating Watt, he might be the best DLineman in this class. His production/size/athleticism ratio is 2nd to none, and he's just scratching the surface on his potential, he's only played defense for 2 years!.

Green Bay took a chance on a guy who had a similar path as JJ Watt a few years ago named Clay Matthews, how did that work out for them?

Matthews was the 26th pick, not Top 10.

You can't draft with hindsight.

Watt reminds me nothing of Spears. Watt is a high energy player who can play all 3 downs.

lol exactly

His athleticism for his size is absurd. People were gushing over Cam Newton's workout numbers, but Watt bested him in the vert and 3-cone while being just 0.03 slower in the shuttle despite weighing in 42 lbs heavier. To compare him to another defensive lineman, Watt outperformed the athletic "freak" Robert Quinn in every test except the 40 by 0.07 weighing in 25 lbs heavier.

He's not just a workout warrior either. He definitely has some of the most impressive game film from this past season.

He should be a no brainer, but he's, you know, from the midwest and played in the Big 10 so he's probably not that explosive. /sarcasm

Spears was playing with some fire this year before he got hurt. Contract years can do that.

Spears is a 2-down player, Watt isn't.

If Fairley goes one pick ahead of us, I'm going to get sick.

Don't worry, Watt's bigger, more athletic, just as disruptive, and not the headache that Fairley is.

Oh don't get me wrong, I love Spears. I am one who constantly argues that he was a big reason for our defense falling out after his injury. I think he is vastly under-rated.

I just don't think him and Watt are similar players and there is nothing wrong with that.

What's funny is that you act like you know.

You might be right, but you might be wrong.

One thing that I do know is that playing football is way more than just about measurables like size and speed. There are plenty of guys who are the same size and strength as Reggie White, yet none of them dominated offenses like White did. There were plenty of DL with more size and speed than Randy White, yet he was more dominant by far than all those guys who played with and against him.

Fairley dominated at the highest possible level of college football, in the strongest conference, against the best offensive lines. Watt never dominated anywhere close to the way Fairley did.

So for you to say with 100% confidence that you know Watt is going to be the better NFL player is pretty damn funny to me.

This is not funny good Sir...this is serious bidness!

The funny part is I act like I know? It doesn't take an expert to realize the obvious. Here's what I said:

"Don't worry, Watt's bigger, more athletic, just as disruptive, and not the headache that Fairley is."

Well, Watt IS Bigger, IS more athletic, and IS just as disruptive... the proof? Go look at the combine results and the stats of both players over the past 2 seasons. As far as the headache comment, it's been out for a while now that Fairley has some character issues, while Watt has been praised for his character.

And what the hell does any of this have to do with comparing Watt vs. Fairley?

1st off, never did I say "with 100% confidence that I know Watt is going to be the better NFL player", so nice try with that one.

Fairley dominated in the SEC, Watt dominated in the Big 10. Where you're wrong here is that the Big 10 generally produces the best offensive line talent year in and year out, so knowing that it actually gives Watt the edge in competition. If you don't think Watt dominated anywhere close to Fairley then you need to go back and watch his games, specifically Ohio St., because you obviously didn't watch him play to make such a dumb statement

LOL. Please don't compare Watt and Fairley. Please. I like Watt, but Fairley is on another planet.

Well, Watt IS Bigger

That's a fact.

Not a fact, but you stated it like it is.

I don't have a lot of time to go back and forth with you but...

You were insinuating that Watt is going to be the better player, right? I mean, why would we care that Watt is bigger and more athletic if not because it means he's a better football player? Were you simply saying that I shouldn't worry about missing out on Fairley only because Watt is bigger, etc.? Why else would I care if not in relation to how they play football?

I assumed when you told me not to worry that Watt is bigger, etc., that you were essentially saying, "Don't worry, Watt will be a better football player than Fairley."

If you aren't talking about what kind of pro football player they will become, then, fine, I agree that Watt is bigger... but why are we talking about that if we aren't talking about how well they will play football? I don't care about who's bigger, I care about who's going to be better.

So, unless you were for some strange reason not talking about what type of football players they will be, then you were acting as if you know Watt will be better, and not to worry about missing out on Fairley.

And it isn't a fact that Watt is 'more athletic' or 'just as disruptive' as Fairley either. Just because Watt had some better results on combine drills doesn't make him more athletic than Fairley. It can be argued that he is, but it isn't a fact, and you state it like it is.

As for 'just as disruptive'... That is quite a stretch, IMO. And considering that everyone has Fairley as the better prospect and that Fairley won the Lombardi Award, I don't think it is too far fetched for me to think there is a chance that Fairley is the better player.

TheFinisher;3883416 said:

You should be able to figure this one out.

You were talking primarily about measurables. You said Watt is bigger and more athletic than Fairley. Presumably you said he is more athletic because of his combine results. Also, presumably, you were talking about what kind of football players they would become and not just the fact that Watt weighed more.

Reggie White and Randy White both were absolutely dominant guys, even though plenty of players every year are bigger and test better at the combine... yet those guys don't play football anywhere close to how well Reggie and Randy played it.

I was saying that you might as well say that Watt is going to be as good as Reggie White because he is just as big and more athletic because of his better combine results.

See?

My point was that Fairley was the more dominant, better player in College in my opinion, and just because Watt is a tad bigger and tested a little better doesn't make him better than Fairley any more than all the guys who tested better than Reggie White were better than him.

Simply put: Combine results mean very little once they hit the football field, and you were saying not to worry because Watt's combine was a tad better than Fairley's.

You seemed pretty sure to me.

You think I'm dumb for thinking the SEC is the best college conference?

No wonder you like Watt better than Fairley.

If we were drafting in our normal 20-25 range, I'd be thrilled with Watt.

At #9? No stinkin way.

I don't feel like going back and forth with you, I really don't care if you're down on Watt. I will however, leave you with these stats so that you understand how dumb it is to say that Fairley was the much more disruptive player in college, or that he's on another level than Watt.

Last 2 seasons

Fairley:

TFL- 27.5
Sacks- 13
Tackles- 88

Watt:

TFL- 36.5
Sacks- 11.5
Tackles- 106

And just for the hell of it, here are Watt's ridiculous combine numbers:

Bench- 34 Reps
Vert- 37 In
Broad- 10 Ft
3Cone- 6.88
Shuttle- 4.21
40- 4.76

All at 6'6 294 lbs... but Fairley's the better athlete right?
