During draft day, I hang around the chat, listen to the radio, watch it on TV, but I don't pay a lot of attention to the message board. Is there usually a thread going that can stand as a record of what any given poster would do in the draft as it went along?
Let me explain why I think that would be fun.
It's fairly easy to wait until the draft is all over and cherry pick available players at the given numbers, but it's much more dicey to make selections as you go. You may get a guy a round before you had to. You may think a guy will be there at #71 and he goes at #43, and he's a lynchpin of your draft strategy as you foresaw it. It ain't easy, I imagine.
So if there isn't such a thread, I think it'd be a hoot. There would be some basic rules, like if a trade is declared (once the pick swap is revealed) you have to agree to take it or not. If you accept it, you move on to those picks. If you reject it, you make the pick immediately and don't make the picks later. Repackaged picks from a trade to move would also be unavailable to you.
The key is not to have too many picks go by after a selection is made. If you trade for #14 thinking Castanzo will be there and he gets taken at #12, then you decide to reject the trade, then you're missing the point of the operation. So getting in in the next couple of picks would be key. And probably more trouble than it's worth. I'm still going to try it.
Example, you're at #9 and the Cowboys are up. A trade is announced. #14 and #78 for #9. You can then declare you want to take it or leave it. Take it, and you now pick at #14 and #78 (and if trades come up that include those picks you can take or leave those too). Reject it, and you pick at #9. If later, #40 and #78 are packaged to move up, you stay at #40 and pick with whatever team is there since you rejected the trade that got you #78.
This is probably something only the very draft nerdy will want to do. I don't even know if I have the time to be here for every pick (especially if we move up, that can come out of nowhere) but I'd love to see how I'd do against the organization and would love to see how the drafts of others on here would turn out. At the end of the draft we'd have our personal list and we can follow those players and see how that went for us.
