Lets say our 6th or 7th round pick is coming up. We've already addressed our needs for starters/future starters. BPA is a QB. Do you draft him to maybe groom to trade him in the future or (at worst) have a better backup than Kitna, or do you reach for someone else?

you most likely are not gonna get a better back up than kitna in round 6-7

in that case I look at

Danny Batten/LB/South Dakota State: 6-3 #250 projected 40 4.69

Scouts have been raving about Batten. The college defensive end has been spending most of his time at middle linebacker and looks like he belongs. He made plays in coverage, has gone sideline-to-sideline against the run and just like college, plays with a non-stop motor. When he took a few reps at defensive end in one-on-one drills he beat blockers. As one scout told us, Batten is just a good football player

Erik Cook, New Mexico
Height: 6-6. Weight: 318.
Projected 40 Time: 5.30.
Combine 40 Time: .
Benchx225: . Arm: 33 7/8.
Projected Round (2009): 6-7

OT

Tyler Eastman Maine
Height 6-6 Weight 325
strength at left tackle comes from his thick lower-body build and leg strength, which he used to successfully anchor in pass protection and drills.
Eastman continues to impress scouts. We can report the Baltimore Ravens are taking a hard look at Eastman and like his skills. A source from the team told us the big tackle may have played himself into the late rounds of the draft

Kinda hard to say one player is the definitive best player in the 7th round. I think you go with a prospect who has intriguing qualities.

Do you plan on taking this QB and putting him on the practice roster? Cause I doubt we get rid of the three current QBs on the roster to make run for a 6th or 7th round QB.

No, but I do hope we sign Matt Nichols of Eastern Washington as a UDFA and put him on the Practice Squad. I think he is another Tony Romo type story of a guy who can be groomed.

I wouldn't draft a QB, because after preseason, we'll have to cut him and then hope he makes the practice squad. Doubt we keep 4 QBs and untill McGee is a better option than Kinta, we have to go with those 3

I too say that we would be better off going the UDFA route in that scenario.

Also, it sounds like you really are underestimating Kitna. As far as backups go, he is outstanding in many ways--good for Romo's development, good general influence and leadership, and can get the job done very well if called on in 3-4 game emergency.

It seems like 2011 may be the better year to start looking at QB--by then we'll know if we plan to keep Kitna another season, and we'll hopefully have a little better read on McGee.

I do like the philosophy of grooming QBs though, so I almost expect us to bring someone in via UDFA route.

I like Ron Wolfe's philosophy of drafting QB's every year, because they can be big-time trade chips in the future.

To some degree maybe. It's not a bad idea to bring guys in regularly (by UDFA or draft) b/c occasionally a Romo or Warner shows up....but neither was drafted.

I don't recall GB picking a QB last season.

The year before they got burned to a crisp doing it...they wasted a second rounder on Brian Brohm and got nothing for it. I think he got picked up by the Bills for the practice squad....ouch.

The team invested a 4th rounder in McGee, so a 6th or 7th rounder isn't bummping him off the roster. Once McGee is the #2 QB, then yes, I would draft a QB every year because the #3 guy is expendable, right now this just isn't the case.

reach for a WR or CB and hope he dazzles returning kicks. Otherwise, go UDFA for a QB.

I like Clifton Gaethers out of South Carolina. He's a 6-7, 280 pound DE with 4.8 speed. He is very raw and he may get drafted higher on potential but he is a player that I would use a late round pick on if available. I think with a years worth of camp and off season training, he could develop into a good 34 DE prospect.

I also like Mike Aguayo from UTEP. He is a 6-4 295 pound OT who has played both Guard and Tackle for the Miners. Good feet, slides well, could use more strength and technique work but good natural ability. Excellent agility for the position. Good downfield blocker and has a good motor. Has a lot of experience and has good work ethic, very coachable and is intelligent. A lot of people like Erik Cook out of UNM and he is a decent player but I like Aguayo better. I think he has more natural talent.

No...I mean, have a better backup for when Kitna is finished. The tone of my sentence didn't carry through correctly.. He'd be future trade bait or future backup. My bad.

I like the idea of grooming QB's though. Do we have a good QB coach? :D
