I do not follow college ball so I am always at an extreme disadvantage come draft day. I depend on y'all to keep me up to date on who's who. How scary is that?

Still draft day is one of my favorite days of the years. Here are my questions.....

It seems that every year some kid makes a tremendous slide on draft day. The kind of slide that has everyone feeling sorry for the kid and the millions they are losing. Who has the potential to make a deep slide on draft day this year? What names should I watch for?

Second, are there kids coming out this year that would have been 1st or 2nd round picks that have injuries that will force them into the second day? I'm talking about the types of players like Canty and McGahee. I've always thought these were good choices on the second day if the potential outweighs the gamble.

Any thoughts?

Here are a couple players we may be interested in with injury problems:

Jack Ikegwuonu
Zack Bowman
Limas Sweed
Jonathan Stewart

One guy that looked like a sure fire top prospect a couple months ago that could fall out of the top 100.
Adarius Bowman

CB Jack Ikegwounu of Wisconsin suffered a knee injury during football activities at his school in January 2008. Viewed as a first rounder, it's doubtful he can fully recover & play in the NFL in the 08 season. He's already fallen in most mock drafts out of the first 3 rounds and many feel he now will be an undrafted FA. Depending on what the medical reports indicate, I'd sure like to see the Cowboys draft him late/sign him as an UFA with good size bonus. Still want the Cowboys to draft 2 CBs (first & 3rd rounders?) who can play in 08, Ikegwounu's future on the team (even on IR) sets us up with quality young CBs for the next 10 years.

We need remember Henry's 5 year contract ends after 09 season when he'll be 34. Also gotta re-sign Newman after 08 season & CB prices skyrocketing (see Asante & Hall contracts). Sure hope we got enough cap money to keep Newman but not at the risk of losing Ware in 09.

I think you'll find that Zack Bowman has resurrected his draft stock, proving to the scouts that he's fully healthy by running a 40 in the 4.45 range at the Combine, and I believe I read he ran similar times at the Nebraska Pro Day this past week...

Don't be surprised if he's eventually a second round pick, which in this draft class is probably what he would have been even if he hadn't gotten hurt...

To me, Ikegwuonu is the real injury steal in this draft, the last I heard he might well not be able to play this season at all, and as a result he's fallen from a 2nd or 3rd rounder to a 7th rounder/undrafted free agent type... but if the doctors say that he'll eventually recover fully from that injury, a late round pick would not be wasted on him, you could "redshirt" him, so to speak, and have yourself a heck of a steal in 2010...

Sweed and Stewart would have gone a little higher if they hadn't gotten hurt when they did, but they'll still both go in the top 40 picks...

I actually like all 4 of those players... I do not like Adarius Bowman, at all...

Being a Husker fan, i know a little about Bowman. He may be healthy now, but the back to back knee injuries have to be a concern for the future. I wouldn't over draft the kid, as much as i like him, just because of the history. Not before the 3rd IMO.

Agreed. I'm a Husker fan myself so I agree totally. What I wouldn't mind, at all, is if he's sitting there around round 4 is Dallas taking him. He would provide depth but he can also return punts, cause he did it in college, so he'd give us some ability at 2 spots. I wouldn't mind that at all.

I have a few ideas on how a franchise can stay ahead of the curve.
This is one of them. If it was up to me I'd pull the trigger on one of these at least once a draft.

I'd have to say we have a good history with the strategy:

Mid 1960's we drafted Staubach in the 12th Rd when he had 4 years of Naval Service. HIT

1985 we drated H. Walker in the 5th Rd. HIT

1991 we drafted C. Henning in the 11th or 12th. HIT

More recently we trade a 3rd rd pk for D. Henson, MISS and draft C. Canty in the 4th. HIT
