Draft debate: Is Jordan Davis a two or three down player in the NFL

He’s a two down player with traits to develop into a three down player if he can improve his pass rush technique and perhaps more importantly improve his conditioning,

Either one can see it as drafting a Vita Vea (Bucs) type powerhouse that sheer brute strength and bulk and skill set allows him to be more of a dominant run stuffer than a difference making interior pass rusher.

It depends upon how you see him,.. want to see him,... how you evaluate him ....and how much importance you place on a 1 tech,.. or a 1 tech that you think has enough pass rush traits to warrant taking in 1st round .

Now with no question what also had to play into Davis' draft stock skyrocketing is the shockingly impressive workout numbers 4.78 40time at 338 lbs.
Now the wall street stock market is fluttering in how Davis needs to play into their immediate draft plans- despite that Davis is not considered an elite interior pass rusher.

Year 1 I would just see his upside as a 2 down NT that beats up the guards/center all game allowing the "nickel" DTs to feast on 3rd down.
Some teams will see his combine and believe they can get him to become a 3 down NT that provides both a huge clog in the run game but also can push the pocket forcing the QB into the edge rushers. Effective, but not something stats would show.

Guys his size and athletic ability are few and far between. Add in he's relatively new to the sport(late HS) and while UGA is a top CFB program with great S&C staff I think the right NFL team could take him to the next level endurance wise-if he's willing.
It really does come down to his attitude and motor. Is he a go getter, or a sit back and do the min?

This is fair...but this is also why I want no part of drafting him anywhere near the 1st round.

Yes, and they could also play him at FB on short yardage and goal line plays.

Vince Wilfork had 16 career sacks.

My concerns w/ Davis is that he appears to be a part time player. However, he is a consistent pocket pusher which is how NT's provide pass rush.

OK, let's evaluate. First team all american and first team all sec. He is completely immoveable, and yet possesses exciting athleticism for his size, being a surprisingly nimble lateral mover who covers ground well. Good instincts. Black hole if RB's get anywhere near him. Powerful hands. Shreds blocks impressively.

Exactly what is it about him that you don't like?

I don't think people realize the dude finished the HIGHEST IN HEISMAN VOTING FOR A DL SINCE NDAMUKONG SUH. That alone is absolutely insane for a NT. Suh played more of a 3-tech and was known for his insane pass rush motor in college while Davis finished 9th in the voting by his sheer impact in the run game alone. If Davis drops to 24 I would draft him in a heartbeat. I think it would take this Cowboys defense from good to great instantly. A starting guard can be had in the second round or FA. You don't let a player like Davis evade you if he falls that low.

I'm partial to adding players with extremely rare size, athletic traits and who also happen to be really good at football. Of course, it depends who else is on the board, but generally speaking I have no problem taking him at 24.

Good way to put it and I agree.

And when it comes to pass rush, is Davis the only player in the draft who can't learn? All of these dudes are projections based on skill, athleticism, effort etc. Davis seems to have it all, so I don't know why his evaluation doesn't consider growth

I'm still finding it shocking how many don't realize the impact a play making pocket collapsing NT can have on the entire D. Just makes everything better.

Of course he can learn. Other DL players in the draft are raw as pass rushers but at least they’ve shown some level of production based on athleticism or a go to move.

Davis has literally shown zero.

At Georgia he wasnt asked to rush much, however his measurables show potential pass rush upside.

With that said, the topic this week is:

Is Jordan Davis a two or three down player in the NFL?
Does Davis have the heart against upper Nfl talent

JDavis has athletic ability and size that is NFL elite.

Does he have the intelligence, heart, and determination needed................I have no clue.
