The draft seldom shakes out the way you expect it to. Most are betting that the Cowboys go DL, Linebacker or RB in the first round. That is a reasonable guess based on perceived team needs. But the reality of the matter is that the Cowboys needs may be much different next year, and the draft isn't just about this year.
The Cowboys could easily go CB in the first round of this year's draft. We have Scandrick penciled in as a starter this year and for the foreseeable future, but Carr isn't likely to be on our long term team projection due to his cap number. He could be a June 1 cap cut THIS YEAR. I could see us taking TWO cornerbacks in this year's draft including as high as the first round.
Dez is a fan favorite, but the public seldom knows the whole behind the scenes story. Either Dez' price is too high for the Cowboys comfort zone or there is something we don't know yet that hasn't come to light or both. While most believe that Dez will get locked up with a long term deal, if the Cowboys doubt that will happen, then the Cowboys may go receiver in the first if a potential replacement for Dez is there for the taking. Williams is not that guy based on his production to date, and WR is a high ticket item, so WR might make more sense than one might expect. Also keep in mind that it is easier to find RB's later in the draft who can start in year 1 than it is a wide receiver. Wide receiver is another position that we could go two deep in this year in the draft depending on how well we like Williams long term.
I wonder how much this board would melt down if we took some combination of 2 corners, 2 wide receivers and a running back in the first 5 rounds? If we are looking ahead and not just focused on this year, that isn't outside the realm of possibility. That probably won't happen. but I think you will see a corner or a receiver taken in the top 3 rounds.
Don't get blinders based solely on this year's "needs". The draft is about filling next year's holes as well, and corner and WR may be huge holes going forward if we don't think we can resign DEZ.
