Draft Dish: Hurricanes' Franklin could be first tackle drafted

Sporting News draft expert Russ Lande and his team of former NFL scouts identify the players whose stock is rising and falling for the 2011 NFL draft:

On the rise
1. Orlando Franklin, OT, Miami (Fla.)

Franklin is a top-line athlete but a bit of a raw prospect, but he has consistently improved every year and now projects as a high second-round pick who could sneak into the first round. He still must get stronger, but he is much better about maintaining his balance and playing under control to easily handle speed rushers and adjust quickly secondary pass-rush moves. He shows the ability to block effectively in the open field, especially adept at pulling to lead perimeter runs.

Franklin has improved a ton in '10 and with a great week of work at the Senior Bowl will continue his ascent up draft boards and perhaps become one of, if not the, first offensive tackle selected.

2. Jonas Mouton, OLB, Michigan

Mouton is an athletic player who has moved up draft boards a lot thanks to improved production in '10. He had flashed big-play ability in the past but had struggled to consistently produce at a high level because he struggled at times to read plays correctly and react quickly. He also often would over-run plays. The light seems to have gone on in his senior year — he's much quicker in reading plays and reacting and thus far more productive.

With strong performances at the NFL Scouting Combine and in pre-draft workouts, he could move into the middle of the second round.

3. Da'Quan Bowers, DE, Clemson (junior)

We always thought of Bowers as a top-flight prospect, but until this year few talent evaluators agreed. The naysayers said he didn't dominate enough and lacked consistency as a pass rusher and thus pegged him as a third-round prospect.

This season, Bowers has eliminated all doubt. He has been a dominant player in '10, and there now is near-universal belief that he is the top defensive lineman in the '11 draft and a likely top-10 pick. Few ends can match Bowers' size, explosive power, quick hands and footwork, athleticism and pass-rush skills.

That should tell you how weak a crop this year's offensive tackles are.

I'll take a guy with lower upside but very little downside like Camiri in round 2 over in OT in the top 5 or 10 where we'll be picking

I agree with that general notion too.

The only problem I see with Camiri is that he most likely projects to RT in the NFL. He's a good driving run-blocker but has struggled with quicker OLBs and DEs on the outside. People make a lot about his effort against Adrian Clayborn, but it was an ideal matchup for Camiri; Clayborn isn't an edge rusher, but more of an effort guy who tries to beat you with a straight bull-rush.

I'm not sure what the Cowboys think of Sam Young in terms of his future starting prospects, but all reports seem to say they are high on him at RT.

Horrid class even with possible JR's yet people are still going to throw a fit if we dont draft OT with our first pick no matter how high it is.

I still like Free at LT and think him and Camiri at both OTs spot will be great

I love to have him on the right side

Gabe Carimi: 6’7'', 315 pounds, Offensive tackle, Wisconsin]

an nasty

Strength
Carimi has NFL strength and should be able to be plugged into an offense immediately. Powerful throughout his frame. Has the strength to seal the edge.

Technique
Needs to maintain his base a little better. If Carimi can do that, he’ll do a better job against speed rushers. Gets good hand position.

plus he played againest Heyward - Clayborn - Kerrigan

all three right in a row I think he go the best of them

My gut feeling is that Dallas is going to be looking to address interior linemen first (OG, C).

Right or wrong, I can see them saying there wasn't good value for where they'll be drafting for OTs. They'll also likely say they really like Sam Young and are comfortable with him.

Just my guess with how they operate. Although, the thinking may have changed with Wade gone now.

He did get the best of them . I have seen him 15 yards down the field , blocking everything in sight , in more than one game. This guy is a stud.

oh I agree - it just depends on what they thing of Young

an hows he progressing

but even a OT in the laster rounds - but we need a interior that can start day one IMO

OL Orlando Franklin: Miami
Franklin is a tough guy to figure out when trying to forecast his play to the next level. Watching tape of him this year it’s obvious that he doesn’t have the type of athletic ability and overall range to handle speed off the edge vs. NFL right ends. However, when watching him last season as a guard against better competition, he really struggled to consistently anchor because of his 6-7 frame and overall inability to drop his pad level and play with much leverage. Therefore, the idea that this guy is one of the top offensive line prospects in the nation with the versatility to play either guard or tackle is a complete shocker to me. Nevertheless, he is a strong guy who has the ability to create some movement off the football in the run game when lined up on the outside. Therefore, in my view, he looks more like a right tackle only, but strikes me more as a reserve in the NFL than capable starter.
