Draft "Experts"

I say this every year the draft comes around. Not only has Kiper been wrong on some prospects, he's been awfully wrong a lot!! Being in Charlotte, he practically made the Panthers draft Jimmy Clausen in the 2nd round of the 2010 draft. That year, Kiper had Jimmy Clausen as the top rated QB in the class with Sam Bradford (2), Colt McCoy (3), Dan LeFevour (4), and Tim Tebow (5). lol @ Kiper's rankings! Clausen finished the 2010 season with 157 completions out of 299 attempts (52.5%), 1,558 yards with 3 touchdowns and 9 interceptions. He was sacked 33 times and fumbled 9 times, losing two. On May 6, 2010, a report on the website "Pro Football Talk" stated that, "Steve Smith 'basically thinks Jimmy is a punk.'". In 2011, the Panthers used their number one overall draft pick to select Cam Newton. The rest is history.

p.s. During the hype of Clausen in the 2010 draft, Kiper stated on live TV, "If Jimmy Clausen is not a successful quarterback in the NFL, I'm done. That's it, I'm out."

Too bad he didn't follow up on that quote!

This is a great rant.

I will say........ I do not take everything Kiper or anyone else says as gospel.

but I do think having guys like him and Mcshay and others on the draft broadcasts, does make the broadcast more fun to watch.

Then again. That’s been happening my as long as I’ve been around to watch the draft. So I have no basis for comparison.

Don’t over value anyone’s opinion in the draft realm.

Who ever the actual draft experts are usually have more than their fair share of bad calls.

Mel Kiper is awesome and has made the draft what it is today.

I do consider him a draft expert but I do not consider him a projection expert.

He knows a lot about the guys in the class and has provided a lot of good entertainment for us over the years and has made the draft a unofficial holiday for football fans.

The draft is so much fun to watch. I can’t freaking wait for Thursday.

the nfl draft is generally my favorite TV event period every year. Besides the games themselves.

Mel Kiper has missed as wrong as he has been right. But so has every other GM and team.
But ... hate him or love him, Kiper has made the draft what it is today.
And he's still around while draft fans ask "Who the H*&^ is Bill Tobin?"

The 27th anniversary landed on Saturday of the memorable moment between former Colts G.M. Bill Tobin and longtime ESPN draft expert Mel Kiper. Roughly a week before that, the player Kiper believed the Colts should have taken shared with Ryen Russillo a story that, if true, makes the entire Tobin-Kiper kerfuffle moot.

Quarterback Trent Dilfer told Russillo that the Colts didn’t draft Dilfer because his agent, Mike Sullivan, had informed the Colts that Dilfer would not sign a contract with Indianapolis.

“I didn’t go to the Colts because my agent told them I would sit out the year and I would then be the Panthers’ first pick in their first year,” Dilfer said. “So that was the whole Mel Kiper, General Manager argument on ESPN that gets shown every year. They couldn’t pick me at five instead of Trev Alberts because we said I wouldn’t play. So I always try to defend the Colts that way. And I regret it because I could have played with Marshall [Faulk] for a long time.”

Everything people are saying about Kiper being the Godfather of the Draft is 100% on-point.

That said, it's 2021 and I would say out of the 8-9 well known "draft gurus" (McShay, Prisco, Zeirlein, Jerimiah, Brooks, Bruglar, et cetera) Kiper is easily the worst talent evaluator IMO.

It's not a question of "who is Mel Kiper"? It's what would we do without guys like him?

These people that irritate us like Stephen A, Bayliss, Sharpe and Cowerd, what would we do without them?

Kiper? Who is he? The most fun of the draft for me. Watching him lose his mind when one of his highly touted, can't miss, instant HOFer players starts to fall is the highlight of the draft for me, along with the Goodell booing.

What's funny is he was right and Polian was wrong but these people are wrong all the time just as Kiper is. There are no sure things and the fact that Kiper treats his as if they are makes it even better. It is not opinion, it is a Kiper fact.

But the funniest part of all of this is his title. Draft Guru. Really?

Not a big fan of Mel Kuiper but this criticism is unfair. Kuiper is just providing a product to consumers that obviously they want. He is one of the first and now there are many who claim to be draft experts. And let's be clear, NFL GMs miss on most of their picks too. Kuiper prepares, and puts his opinions out there for the public - and then takes criticism. I don't like him, but give him credit for what he does.

No one knows what is best for every pick for every team. I was just watching NFL channel and a show called "How far will Aaron Rodgers drop?" or something like that. It was a reminder that Bill Parcels, with QBs named Drew Bledsoe, Brew Henson and Tony Romo on his roster, drafted Marcus Spears with Aaron Rodgers still on the board. Romo was an undrafted free agent with no experience at the time. How do you let a top rated QB go by when you have those QBs on your roster? The Cowboys celebrated the pick of Spears. They had already drafted Demarcus Lawrence. It was a classic case of drafting for need and in this case, Rodgers, who could have been the first pick in the draft, had dropped all the way to 20.

This trip down memory lane reminded me of how overrated Parcells was and how unsuited to coach the Dallas Cowboys.

Gonna miss the booing this year again with no fans.
