Draft Goal

Our draft goal this year should be to acquire as many day 2 picks as possible. Hopefully a team looks to trades back into the latter part of the 1st to grab a QB and that we can get a day 2 pick for Romo. I think 5 day 2 picks is possible. With said picks, we can address the D with 2 D-linemen and 2 DBs with either a WR or TE thrown in.

I really hope we get something better than a 4th round pick for Romo.

That's what I've been thinking. Trade back in addition to a Romo trade. :thumbup:We'd be in great shape. If that happened we may field the best team we've had in the 2000s.

Don't even need to trade back...just get the extra 2nd for Romo somehow and we can still come up with a haul

1- Reddick
2A- DE- Willis/Basham/Hendrickson/Rivers
2B- WR- Godwin/Zay Jones
3- CB- Moreau/Witherspoon
4- BPA TE or S

Give me that draft and I'm set.

As long as they don't get too cute and get too trade Happy like the ST draft a few years ago in 2009 where we kept trading and trading until we finished with 12 picks with multiple picks in each round but the first.

Go look at that draft hall... Not one of them became a valuable lasting member of the cowboys

This needs to be read by everyone as every year everyone just wants to trade down and accumulate more picks. As if that's always the answer. Having more selections is good but there's a balance at play. You can't move yourself out of getting quality players just for the sake of numbers.

That was a notoriously bad draft top to bottom. Not defending our choices in that draft just saying there's a lot of players in the first three rounds of that draft that never amounted to anything, much more then usual it feels like. Trading down within reason is a good idea where we're at because, unless someone falls, it feels like we're just past a plateau point where we will likely get one of the players we have rated as a 1st round player and will be choosing from a fairly broad pool of 2nd round players.

I'm not suggesting that we go crazy and keep drafting down. I am suggesting we make one trade, trading out of the 1st to acquire a 2nd and a 3rd. The other trade is for a player not expected to be with the team next season, so that's just bonus.
My wish to acquire as many day 2 picks this year is because it will allow us to draft to the strength of this class which also lines up very nicely with the positions we need to either upgrade or replenish because of loss to free agency. I also don't see a steep drop in talent from the 28th pick to a pick in the middle of the 2nd round (or even late in certain cases). So if a team in need of a QB is willing to give up a second and third, I jump all over that, especially this year.
I also don't want to compare our current regime to the one responsible for the 2009 draft. That draft was historically bad. I don't think we could duplicate that stinker even if we tried.

This draft we should trade back with Cleveland when they want to get Deshaun Watson.

That's not going to net them much value. It's only an 80 point difference, so maybe their 2nd and their 4th.

You could get their other 2nd(52nd overall), their 3rd(65th overall) and maybe their 4th(108th overall) for 660 points from Dallas to 680 from Cleveland. That's a pretty significant drop though to only be acquiring a 3rd Rd pick.

I'd be fine with that especially if we trade Romo for a pick. Their 4th is a high pick as well. A 5 pick trade down won't kill us. Who is this can't miss guy who will be there at 28? I'm not buying that

Make board, make position priority list, take best player at your pick that matches your priority list, cross off priority list each round picked, rinse, repeat.

I have faith in our scouting process. I do not have faith in our ability to maximize pick value outside of what I just described.

They value the 5th round option too much to trade out, so a trade down this year is highly unlikely

You'll get a player at 28 and you'll like it!
