Draft grades revisited

IMO, we need to give it another year minimum, probably 2 before grading.

I wouldn't give up on Tolbert just yet. WR can be a tough adjustment year 1 on rookies, even 1st rounders. We also moved Tolbert around a lot early in camp which could have led to extra confusion.

Found this an interesting read when you look at these grades from the experts. How do you think they did?

Rd

1 grade a B. They missed this by a mile. This is an A+++. Guy walked in as a starting rookie left tackle and is playing like an all pro. B my rear end.

2 B+ this grade is a NM at the moment. Hard to get in on the action with our current line. Wait and see.

3 A- This is currently a D-. When yur 3rd round wr cant even get active and the team started out with 2 WRs on the IR..... ugh. Maybe he can turn it around, but this is starting off horrible. WTH is happening here? Did he forget how to play? Cnat adjust to the NFL? Very disappointing.

4 B+ Cant give him much of a grade yet. I think the guy can clearly play, but he is never going to be Tony Gonzalez. Looks like he could be a solid NFL TE. If he starts next year, this grade is an A.

5 c+ BLAND this grade is a solid B. Guy made plays in pre season and made plays in his limited opportunities. If you 5th rd DB is active most games and making plays, thi sis an easy B+ Bland could end up being starter in 2 years.

5 B Waletzco.. NM. Simply hasnt been around enough for a grade.

5 c+ Clarke NM.. just showed up. Need some time.
I'm very happy with Tyler, but he's not playing at an All-Pro level right now.

Tolbert was a third-round pick. It's very rare for those guys to step in as starters, and the bust rate on third-rounders is really high. The problem here is your expectations, not the player. He'll develop or he won't. It's like how everyone is confused why Jabril Cox isn't a Pro-Bowler yet.

Williams could play more if they decide to use Parson less on the edge. Last season when Gregory was in the lineup, they seemed to use Parsons more as a blitzer than as an edge rusher.

I would say Armstrong's play is keeping his snap counts low, but I dont believe that is the case. Armstrong is inside alot in pass rush packages

Probably right about DA. The Cowboys usually like to draft players to fill a while when someone falls off in FA.

Not sure what DAs contract looks like but I consider a 2nd rounder a premium pick so if Williams isn’t close to be a starter next year it’s a miss IMO.

I hope I’m wrong but I thought we drafted him too early considering almost every draft analyst out there had him outside the top 60/70.

While I agree finding a future LT at where we drafted is huge, I think part of what has been wrong with the cowboys drafting is they hit on firsts and then are pretty weak in the middle rounds.

I wouldn't give an A to the draft just bc of the first but massive credit is due
.. B... ?

I dont think Armstrong is cutting into his time much. He moves inside alot in pass rush packages. My guess is he will likely absorb Fowlers snaps next season. Fowler is only on a 1 year deal, and if he gets the 8 sacks he is on pace for, he will cash in somewhere.

Armstrong is on a two year deal. However I dont know if Williams is ever going to be a base down end or just a pass rusher. So I dont know if he will ever be getting the 70% snap share a starting DE here usually gets

If Sam doesn’t develop into a baseline D starter it was an absolutely terrible pick.

WRs don’t usually make a big impact as rookies, especially those not taken in rounds 1 or 2. Simply reading defenses properly and seeing what the QB sees and knowing that the QB adjusts and throws to a spot to throw you open only works if the wr sees and adjusts the same as the QB. If not, you end up with passes where fans ask who was he throwing to? If Tolbert even becomes a solid possession receiver by next year, that’s a good 3rd round pick.

I used to think the same, but man the last few years have changed my opinion. London is already looking like a stud, Pickens might be WR1 by ROY and Olave is already making an impact with terrible QB play.

Smith is not an A+.he has filled in admirably on short notice at LT but he has struggled occasionally and he is definitely not playing at a pro bowl level.
