Kevin’s “Draft” Grocery List

Draft Strategy:
The Boys have done a nice job filling most of their glaring needs in free agency by acquiring TO and addressing there defensive and offensive line needs, so they won't have to draft for a specific need. Instead, they can go with the “best player available” approach. Now obviously you don’t want to take a player at a position that you don’t need but at least you are not handcuffed to a particular position when there are better players at other positions than the particular “must have” need.

The Cowboys still have some needs that they need to address in the draft, but most of their needs coincide with the deepest positions of this draft. As a result, the cowboys should be able to draft for quality and still meet most of their needs.

The most obvious needs going into this draft are offensive line, linebacker and free safety however Based on comments made By Jerry Jones, I am more inclined to think they will draft a young cornerback at some point in the draft and move A. Henry to free safety.

The following picks are my order of preference based on availability at the time we draft. I have not included any players that I feel have no chance of being there when we draft @ # 18 however because some players slide a bit each year I am including some players who may go a few spots ahead of where we draft.

First round
Jimmy Williams 6-2 216 CB/FS
Ernie Sims 5-11 235 OLB Florida St
Bobby Carpenter 6-3 250 OLB Ohio St
Manny Lawson 6-5 240 OLB/DE North Carolina St.
Kamerion Wimbley 6-4 250 OLB/DE Florida St.

Second round
Nick Mangold 6-3 300 C Ohio St.
Taitusi Lutui 6-4 340 OG USC
Davin Joseph 6-6 310 OG/C/OT Oklahoma
Charles Spencer 6-5 350 OG/OT Pitt
Gabe Watson 6-4 339 DT Michigan

Third round
Pat Watkins 6-4 206 FS Florida State
Cedric Griffin 6-1 200 CB/FS Texas
Gerris Wilkerson 6-3 230 ILB Georgia Tech
Jonathan Scott 6-7 315 OT Texas
Devin Hester 5-11 190 WR Miami

First round
Jimmy Williams 6-2 216 CB/FS ---not just no but hell no
Ernie Sims 5-11 235 OLB Florida St---doesnt fit this defense
Bobby Carpenter 6-3 250 OLB Ohio St---good fit for 3-4
Manny Lawson 6-5 240 OLB/DE North Carolina St.---potentially good fit here
Kamerion Wimbley 6-4 250 OLB/DE Florida St.---ditto Lawson

Second round
Nick Mangold 6-3 300 C Ohio St.---no way, interior OL's are almost always wasted high picks and Mangold is no better a prospect than Al Johnson was when we took him
Taitusi Lutui 6-4 340 OG USC---threat to eat himself out of league, would hurl if we pick him in 1st or 2nd rd
Davin Joseph 6-6 310 OG/C/OT Oklahoma---probably unavailable where we pick in rd 2, but good prospect
Charles Spencer 6-5 350 OG/OT Pitt---not in the 2nd, and probably not a player we'd pick anyway because hd doesnt seem to fit what they want guards to do
Gabe Watson 6-4 339 DT Michigan---not impressed with what I've seen from him

Third round
Pat Watkins 6-4 206 FS Florida State---good value if we get him in 3rd
Cedric Griffin 6-1 200 CB/FS Texas---wouldnt pick him on day one
Gerris Wilkerson 6-3 230 ILB Georgia Tech---ditto Griffin
Jonathan Scott 6-7 315 OT Texas---would be glad if we got him in rd 3
Devin Hester 5-11 190 WR Miami---no way this guy goes on day one

I am personally hoping Dallas trades out of the first round. I think Houston desperately needs a tackle and would trade their 2nd,3rd, and 5th rounders for the Cowboys 18th pick if Winston Justice is still there. If they don't, someone like New Orleans or Green Bay will. With 2 2s and 2 3rds and 2 5ths, Dallas could address multiple needs. The draft could look something like this.

2nd round (high) - Thomas Howard - OLB
2nd round - Max Jean Guilles G or Andrew Whitworth T
3rd round - Pat Watkins FS
3rd round - Martin Nance or Maurice Stovall WR or another Olineman like Charles Spencer or Ryan O'Callaghan

This is alot better than reaching for a player who's value is not worth the 18th pick.

I don't totally agree, I think we have MORE ability to go after the BPA, but the BPA strategy lends itself to us more because the positions we need are deep in this draft...LB, S, OL.

Jimmy Williams is a punk with a BA and demands to play CB so he'll get paid, I always referred to him as toast at CB because he got burnt a LOT, esp for a DB of his hype.
Ernie Sims is a great player, but he's about 10-15 pounds too light and about 4 inches too short. We're not drafting him. He'd have to play SS, and we have 3 of those already.
Here's a better list below....
