I really don't think people understand the concept of trading draft picks.
For instance, here we have a guy who thinks that San Diego would make the following trade (with pick value in parentheses)
#11 (1250)
for
#12 (1200)
#61 (292)
For the #12 and #61, he could move up to the 7th pick. Or to move from #12 to #11, he could give up a late 4th rounder. No team will give up a 1st and a 2nd to move up one spot to #11 in the draft. To suggest that a team would shows a clear misunderstanding of the concept of value.
Of course, there are others who think the draft value chart is a rule as opposed to guidance. These are the people who assume that because 11 is "worth" 1250 that we could trade down for any two picks that would add up to 1250. These types of people assume that the decision to trade is the Cowboys. As if the Cowboys could force a trade down merely because of the pick value chart. Such a belief is equally as stupid. The other team has to want to trade and have a reason for it.
So here is my advice to you people who want to start talking about trading draft picks: First decide if Team A wants to move up because there is someone they want. Then decide if Team B wants to move down because there is someone they want that they can get at the lower spot and pick up a pick. Then decide if the trade value of what Team A offers is REASONABLY CLOSE to what Team B offers. It doesn't have to be exact. A team might give up more a bit more than the trade value chart suggests if there is a person they really desire that they are going after. Or a team might demand more to trade to their picks because they want someone. Or a team might be willing to trade down for less than equal value because there really isn't anyone they want and could use the extra pick.
So, before people talk about trading up and down with draft picks, make your suggested trade make sense FROM BOTH TEAMS PERSPECTIVES.
