Draft Lottery

I like how the NBA does the lottery....it helps to bring a bit of mystery and suspense to the draft. It also helps teams realize that if they try to tank, that doesn't guarantee the top pick in the draft. I also like how they make it so that at worst the team with the worst record will draft 4th.....

I would to see the NFL do this too. There are 20 teams that do not make the playoffs. The team with the worst record gets 20 balls, the 2nd worst record gets 19 balls, and so on until you get to the 20th worst team with only 1 ball. Everytime a team is drawn, all of their balls are removed from the lottery. This year, Miami would have 20 balls.....if they didn't win the lottery, or get any of the top 3, then they would be no worse than 4th....

I know this would be unpopular by most of the board....but I like the lottery idea.

It's a dumb idea. No team in the NFL is going to try and tank. It's not worth the hit you'd take to your fan base to get a pick a couple spots higher. Just let the worse team pick first.

no idea is a dumb idea.....it may be an unreasonable idea, but definitely not dumb...it may be an idea you dislike, but no idea is a dumb idea....

but your negativity is noted.

i don't like a lottery for football - we've only got 16 games and you will get hurt if you don't go hard - that combined with an early trade deadline make tanking much less of a issue

Not me. I think that's hokey.

Me too but not because it's hokey but it's because it's rigged. The worst team has rarely ever won the lottery.

Why would the NFL mimic something that isn't half as successful as the way they do it?

I think that the current system is just fine. But they might have to do that soon cause noone is going to want to pay 65mil to an unproven rookie. The #1 overall pick just isn't worth it.

The NBA draft is two rounds long. They only have five players on the floor at a time. Football has more complex dynamics and the comparison between the sports might not be a fair one.

Eh, I think something like this could work for the NFL, it would need to be tweaked though.

Problem is that the current system doesn't have any issues, so something like this won't gain a lot of traction.

The lottery works in the NBA, I'm not sure what you guys are talking about. In general, #1 NBA picks tend to bust a lot less than #1 NFL picks, so in the NFL it's a crapshoot regardless.

In the NBA, the #1 pick is usually head and shoulders above anybody else. It's actually rare you have 5 guys to argue about going #1, it's usually one guy for sure, and a second guy maybe then everyone else.

Which is not to say there aren't great guys found later in the draft, but the #1 guy is usually clear cut.

I would be in favor of a pre-established rookie pay scale but not a lottery for the non-playoff teams.

so nobody likes the lottery

but i think we are pretty much all in agreeance that the initial contract needs to be capped.

honestly, I do not believe a rookie, who has never stepped foot on an NFL field, deserves to make more than someone who has already been in the league. I don't care how much hype a player has.....let them prove it on the football field. A two year contract and after that 2 years, the drafting team has exclusive rights to retain the player, or can reject and allow the player to become a UFA

Well at this point the rookie contracts are just getting ridiculous. How long before a guy has 100 million guranteed without having played a single down.

If this becomes the case however, Rookie contracts will end up being maybe 2 or 3 years tops.
